I May Not Look Homeless, But I Am

A lot of people have the perception that shelter life today is for the junkie, the uneducated, the criminal or the battered wife seeking refuge from her abusive partner. In my experience, most of the people I have met in the shelter system are there for a variety of reasons. In the shelter I have met bank tellers, writers, students and even retirees.

Who Is At Fault for This Car Accident?

I'm sure that most of you have experienced the feeling of having to be somewhere by a certain time, only to get on the road and face terrible traffic and road closures due to car accidents. A question that I get asked frequently is "which car is at fault for my car accident?" While in some scenarios, the answer is easy, usually the answer is...it depends.

What I learned As a Medical Student Working With Low-Income Families

As a medical student taking part in a Social Paediatrics course at The Hospital for Sick Children, I was recently immersed in the lives and healthcare needs of low-income families in Toronto. This experience reshaped the lens through which I now view healthcare and helped me recognize that societal factors greatly influence the emotional and physical wellbeing of children and their families.

From Seed to Symposium in Ireland

As a lover of food, and a tourism professional, the fall holds a special place in my heart. The summer air cools, the season's bounty is gathered and celebrations abound. This fall, I'm particularly excited because I'm also returning to Galway, Ireland for the inaugural Food On The Edge Symposium -- where I'll experience a second harvest, of an idea planted by Chef Jp McMahon.

There's a Difference Between Fantasy and Cheating on Ashley Madison

I'm a big believer in some personal autonomy. I don't feel I owe it to my husband to share every one of my deepest and darkest secrets. And I don't push him to tell me everything on his mind either. God no, I don't want to know everything on his mind. I'm a gal who enjoys a bit of mystery and his over-sharing would be a buzz kill. But there is a difference between "thought" and "action". It's fine to fantasize -- no harm is done.

Soaking Up the Toronto Skyline on an Evening Cruise

I boarded Mariposa's Northern Spirit ship the for a themed dinner and sail party. The company has a legion of flotillas, six in total, and in varying sizes to accommodate large or intimate parties. The Spirit is the largest of the fleet and is able to hold 575 passengers. With three spacious decks, we could wander up to the open air top and soak up the evening's skyline.

Want to Be Empowered? Go to the Toronto 2015 Parapan Am Games

If we can learn one thing from the Parapan Am athletes, it's that we can fulfill our dreams and find greatness in the most difficult and unconventional of circumstances. But we need to believe in ourselves, first and foremost. Then we need to follow through with hard work and grit. The Toronto Parapan Am Games will be the largest ever held, with more than 1600 athletes from 28 countries. Attend the Games to support the athletes but, more importantly, to be inspired and empowered by them.

Canada Needs To Better Protect the Homeless During Heatwaves

Governments of all levels across the country need to consider the mounting evidence for increasing climate variability and create actionable plans for vulnerable persons to ensure that those most likely to be adversely effected by extreme weather events are protected with the right supports. This must start with ending homelessness for as many Canadians as possible and closing the widening income gap that pushes far too many into poor quality housing.
Toronto is Canada's largest city and the capital of Ontario, with more than 2.5 million people in the city proper and 5 million in the wider metropolitan area. It's considered the centre of Canada's banking and financial industry and one of the world's most multicultural cities, with more than 140 languages and dialects spoken within its border. Just over 30 per cent of Toronto residents speak a language other than English or French at home. The city was established as the town of York in 1793 by Governor John Graves Simcoe and was incorporated as Toronto in 1834. It's home to a vibrant arts and culture scene, the Toronto International Film Festival, NXNE, the AGO, one of the largest gay pride festivals in the world and four major league sports teams: The Toronto Blue Jays, the Toronto Argonauts, the Toronto Raptors and the Toronto Maple Leafs.
