We've all heard the expression "You are what you eat." Increasingly, that's the case with the North American diet. Over consumption of highly processed foods and eating for stimulation instead of nourishment is taking its toll on our collective health. I realized that a plant-based diet is the most efficient way to eat.
I have always felt that it is possible to have the world of luxury and sustainable fashion come together. If these two powerful combinations could meet, I am sure more people would be open to making the change to environmentally friendly trends. Luckily, my dreams are coming true. More and more there are greater options for vegan fashion.
Vegan athletes are grabbing headlines with increasing regularity, and are jumping at the chance to share the secret of their success: a compassionate vegan diet. Meagan Duhamel is one such athlete. In a recent interview, she explained how her plant-based diet helped improve her performance and led her to become the amazing jumper she is today.
Aside from the obvious differences between my bake sale experiences as a child and my upcoming experience this week (i.e. that I am now an adult and a vegan, and that I know exactly what this particular bake sale will raise money for), I'm also very aware of the community aspect of this bake sale. This year, we have around 20 volunteers planning, baking, and working towards goals of promoting awareness and improving the lives of local animals.
While I eventually plucked up the courage to ditch meat and, later, all animal byproducts, my dietary choices sometimes puzzle many of my fellow Calgarians. They ask me, "How do you do it? Where do you go to eat?" as though I'm performing an unbelievably difficult task. In reality, though, eating a vegan diet in this city isn't all that hard.
I avoid GMOs and those who promote and serve GMOs. There is no way that I knowingly want to put those ingredients into my body, my friends or family's bodies, and I certainly do not want to support Monsanto. I trace my food back to where it came from. This makes me feel good, and also makes me feel confident in all other principles I have listed as above.
And what better way to celebrate any occasion, than with a decadent raw food dessert like Hacienda's own Raw Carrot Cupcakes? The below recipe and many others are featured daily in our raw restaurant, and will also be available in the soon to be published Hacienda Del Sol Cookbook! What are you waiting for? Make these cakes.
I was 20-something and it was the 90s, low-fat was all the rage. Everything you could probably think of was low fat. Back then everyone thought if you ate low fat then you would never put on fat. Looks like the joke was on me. Looking back, I can see how unhealthful that was and thankfully there is more reliable nutritional information out there now.
When I am shopping for a handbag there are some "deal breakers" that I have to watch out for. First, it must have enough room to pack all of the necessities (wallet, ski passes, pen, notepad, toothbrush case and, if I am lucky, a compact umbrella). The handbag would ideally have room to spare in case I need to put other little items that I need to haul around on any particular day. And, it must be vegan.
For me, choosing a vegan diet for my son was a fairly simple decision. All parents want the best for their children, and I believe that the best choice for both him and me is a balanced, plant-based diet. I substantiated this belief with a professional opinion before I began introducing solid foods.
It is the season my friends. The season of all things fruitastic and I can tell you that I am LOVING the bounty! Now, I wouldn't make you forgo your granny's fave secret for flakey pie crust and leave you dried out and crumbling without a super pie solution. This recipe also doesn't contain any weird soy modifiers, binding agents or suspect oils. Just goodness.
I know you may be thinking, isn't just drinking juice in general better than no juice at all? Well, there is something to be said about that, as it's better than what most people are drinking daily (soda, sugared coffees and pasteurized juice). However if you are making the effort to enhance your health, then you may as well go the full length and do it right!
Passover is a Jewish holiday that extends for eight days, requiring observers to avoid leavened bread. That's the basic rule. No problem. I don't remember the last time I ate leavened bread. Beyond this -- the rules get a little fuzzy. You could join 10 different families for Passover on the same street and have 10 different experiences of what Passover is.
White rice isn't exactly bad for you. Gasp! I know right? How could this be? All the heath gurus telling you to inject your tummy full of whole grain goodness and then I spring this on you? Blasphemous! So here's the deal... According to Chinese Medicine, people have used white rice therapeutically for years.
