My last few overseas trips have been to Asia and the discrepancy between how recycling is handled here in North America versus other continents is silently alarming. I see the eco-friendly initiatives that hotels offer, from the baseline reuse of towels and linens to recycling bins and paper cups. But is this enough? Am I being a conscious traveller and doing what I can to combat the negative effects of tourism? Soon, I'll be making my way to Cambodia and in my research of Siem Reap, I stumbled upon a great recycling program that addresses some of my concerns.

Meet the 13-Year-Old Girl Taking on Bottled Water

The success of the Blue Communities project in Ontario can be mainly attributed to Robyn Hamlyn who has met with 18 mayors and councillors. She talks about the environmental impacts of bottled water, the preposterous amount of profit bottled water companies make off communities' lakes and streams and the stricter standards with which tap water is regulated. And the incredible part of this success story is that Hamlyn is only 13 years old.

Before you make a reservation, check out what the restaurant offers in terms of ingredients, menu items and eco-aspects. Ask if they use reusables, including cloth napkins and tablecloths. If you currently frequent establishments that use disposables (plastic cups for condiments and coleslaw), suggest that they switch.
