My series Creative Spaces, which started out with homes of all shapes and sizes, is now expanding into cities. For the first time in human history more than 50 per cent of the world's population lives in cities -- that's more than three billion people, and it's growing by about 60 million a year. Our great cities are at once the economic, cultural, and intellectual engines that drive human civilization and its greatest monuments.

Cities are living, breathing laboratories, filled with innovation and discovery; they are canvases too, and the human imagination and capacity to create are endless. Whether it's a starchitect-designed building, a government-funded public art display, or an inspired green space, this series will highlight some of the most unique and inspirational designs and installations, big and small, temporary and permanent, that can be found in cities around the world.

With Art Basel Miami Beach celebrating its 10th edition Dec. 1-4, I couldn't think of a more appropriate city with which to begin this series. My colleague Steven Pedigo and I complied a slideshow highlighting some of Miami's most creative and imaginative public art displays and spaces.
