I recently went to Vancouver Fashion Week and saw many different hair trends both on and off the runway. This fall there are so many looks to choose from, there is bound to be a hair trend you will love and can incorporate into your own special fall look.
Before you embark on colouring your tresses or getting a new cut, have a conversation with your hairstylist about the steps you will need to take once you are done with the look and want to change your hair. Some looks will take time to grow out or you may need to cut your hair.
Also, consider the maintenance. How often will you need touch ups? What are the products you will need to care for your new colour? Will your new style require more time in the morning and will you need to invest in new styling tools?
Of course, it is exciting to have a new hair colour and style, but it is a good idea to be prepared so you can enjoy your new look to the fullest!
To find out the latest on fall hair trends, I was fortunate enough to speak with Jessica Van Kuyk at Suki's Salon. Jessica is a master colour designer, principal hair colour instructor, artistic director and L'oreal Professionnel colour ambassador.
Jessica shared with me her views on the top hair trends for fall 2015.
What are the inspirations for fall hair trends?
The pre Raphaelite era, the fashion house of Biba, early 1970's bohemian glamour, muses like Anjelica Huston and Jerry Hall are all on trend right now.
What are the top trends for fall hair colour?
Copper hair colour is very big this season. Burnished copper with soft golden accents. For brunettes deep cool violet based hues, for blondes we have two strong trends -- rose gold -- soft champagne and rich golden tones. The second being bronde - a balance of hazelnut and honey hues - universally flattering to all skin tones.
What are the top style trends for fall hair?
A return to extreme lengths -- the xxl trend -- extra-long hair. Waves and texture -- from polishes glam waves to sexy bed head hair. Braids are still going strong -- especially with a return to folklore inspired fashion. The WOB look -- wavy bob is fresh and effortless looking.
How can a person introduce these looks to their daily life?
Incorporating some texture into their current style - using a wand or a small flat iron to create movement. Use a heat protectant setting spray that is suitable for all hair types. You tube and Pinterest offer many braiding 'how to' tutorials and step by step videos on how to style these looks on your own.
How to care for colour treated hair?
Wash less frequently. Use tepid water. Opt for a gently sulfate free shampoo. Use a heat protectant before blow drying or using hot tools.
Any other tips?
Hair oils are not heat protectants. Many consumers are misinformed on this. Using heat in conjunction with oil is actually cooking the hair. You want to look for a heat protectant that is leave in -- for all hair types and level of damage.
