I try to care for myself throughout the year. Not just the holidays or when it is stressful at work. If I am in a more balanced frame of mind, I can then be a better person for everyone around me.

To keep the balance, I do yoga, run, and many other activities. But from time to time, I also treat myself to a spa treatment that can really benefit my well-being.

Recently, I was lucky enough to speak with Mika Ozeki Saunderson, Owner, Yoko's Haute Coiffure & b-yu Head Spa. Mika shared her knowledge on the wonderful treatments of the Head Spa experience.

Mika shared her knowledge on this treatment and tips on how you can keep calm and balanced this holiday season.

What is a Head Spa experience?

A "Head Spa" is essentially a "facial for the scalp". Healthy beautiful hair grows from a healthy scalp, just like plants in fertile soil". It involves first of all thoroughly analyzing the scalp, personalizing the shampoos/masks to the individual's scalp/hair condition, preparing the scalp using various products and state-of-the-art equipment, exfoliating, shampooing, treating and massaging.

How is this unique from other spa services?

The Head Spa is unique in that it focuses entirely on the head via using a combination of various scalp massaging techniques, Micro Mist technology, and various methods of shampooing the scalp to stimulate blood/lymph circulation throughout the entire body.

We live in the age of computers, gadgets and stress. Many of us carry great amount of tension in our scalp/shoulders. The combination of water, shampooing and massaging all contribute to a deep sense of release and rejuvenation.

Who can have this service done?

Everyone!

What are the benefits?

Gives you an effect of a "face lift" and improved complexion by toning the scalp and promoting lymph drainage. Prevents hair loss and promotes healthy hair growth.

Reduces stress and improves mood by increasing 'feel-good hormones' in the body: i.e. Serotonin, Dopamine and Endorphin and reducing Cortisol. Induces a sense of overall well being as it stimulates the pressure points directly associated to various parts of your body.

How is the service performed?

You are lying down in full reclining position on an ergonomic chair.

How often can this be done?

Anywhere from once a week to once or twice a month. If you are treating hair loss or any kind of scalp problem, once a week is recommended. For those wanting pure rejuvenation/relaxation, every couple weeks to once a month is good.

Here are a few of my tips on how to prevent stress and keep calm this holiday season:

Take a holistic approach: 8 hours of sleep a night, a healthy and nutrient rich diet, 8 glasses of water a day, a good exercise program and BREATHE!

It's simple things that really help us alleviate stress...and it's how we take care of the inside that shows on the outside.

When I slip into a period of extreme stress I know I have to get more sleep (when you get less is when you get sick!), cut out the refined sugar and white flour and load up on Omega rich foods (to decrease internal inflammation such as salmon and avocado).

Another great thing to include in your daily diet to keep healthy are antioxidants (lots of berries), magnesium (sweet potatoes) and vitamin B complex (broccoli) and vitamin D (supplement), try to get some cardio or yoga into my week and get a massage!

I will continue to try new wellness treatments and share my experiences. If you have ideas or questions about living well please leave a comment below and I will do my best to find the answer for you.

Your suggestions are always welcome, as I continue on my journey to enjoy life to the fullest. Let's have the very best year ever!
