Trying on jeans can be a really positive experience or a not so great experience. With those bright fluorescent lights in the change room and the sales person asking from the other side of the door, "how are they fitting?" Purchasing jeans can be a roller coaster of emotions.

The sales clerk brings another pair of denim to me and this time I can get them on, but not able to sit down or breathe. Finally, I have a third pair of jeans, these I can get on and feel great, but my tummy is hanging over the waist.

If you have been following my blog, you know that comfort and feeling great are my top priorities in fashion. Fortunately, Jason Trotzuk owner and designer at Fidelity denim, shared with me his top tips on how women over 40 can feel and look their best in denim.

Celebrities like Khloe Kardashian, Jessica Alba and other celebrities have been seen strutting around Los Angeles in Jason's denim.

How To Get The Best Fit Over 40

It is not so much about the style of the denim as it is the quality of the jeans. Denim that is higher quality will keep its shape and not loosen with wear. Jeans with less stretch will be more flattering as they will provide great shape and curve on the body.

Jason revealed to me that the secret to high quality denim is not only what the denim is made of, but also where the jeans are made. If you prefer a premium quality jean, look for Italy, Japan or Turkey as the origin of manufacturer. These countries tend to produce the softest denim and provide the best shape.

Women 40+ tips

Darker denim is great to hide areas that you may want to camouflage.

Don't wear what doesn't fit. I know this is a pretty straight forward tip. But when something is on sale or you are tired and just need to buy a pair of jeans, it can be tempting to pick up a pair of denim that just fit so-so. Don't do it, you will never be completely happy with them.

Look for mid-rise or high-rise jeans, this style of denim can be more forgiving for mature body types. A medium rise jean (the waist is at the belly button) is easier for mature bodies to wear and can be more flattering.

If you would like to have a leaner more polished look in denim avoid rips, fading or detailing in areas that you would prefer to smooth over.

Jason revealed the top denim trends for spring and summer.

High-Waisted Jeans

This sky high denim trend is still on point. High waisted denim can be a challenge to wear unless you are tall and thin, but they look fabulous and dressy enough to wear to an evening event. Try to pair it with a blazer and silk tank for a night look. Fabulous if you add some chunky bold accessories.

Relaxed Skinny Jeans

They are like boyfriend jeans but a bit more tailored and you can wear them with heels or sneakers. On the top, pair the relaxed skinny jean with a t-shirt or casual printed blouse.

Washed Out Denim

Inspired by the 70's, these jeans look like your favourite denim you have had for 20 years. They are worn loose for spring and lighter fade colours. There is an easier, casual look with these washed out jeans. Perfect for a Sunday afternoon stroll through a farmers market or hanging out at the local cafe.

How To Care For Denim

I have heard so many myths over the years about how to care for denim. Don't wash your jeans, wash your jeans with stones and many more... Jason says it is simple to care for jeans, just wash and wear. With more washes your jeans should get better.

Stay tuned to my blog and share your comments below. Your tips and suggestions are always welcome, as I continue on my journey to find pretty, stylish and comfortable fashion.
