Over the past few years, my skin has really improved. I used to have some adult acne and now with a good diet and being diligent about my skincare, my skin has really improved.

Recently, I was lucky enough to speak with Jessica Kmiec, Makeup artist based in Winnipeg. Jessica shared her top tips on how you can have flawless skin and a beautiful foundation look.

Jessica shared these top tips:

Beautiful makeup starts with balanced skin. In order to have your foundation work for you and look its best, you need to use the right skin care products for your skin type.

Determine what type of skin you have. Most people fall into one or more of these five categories; dry, dehydrated, sensitive, oily, or combination (oily and dry). For example, if you're oily, don't skimp out on a moisturizer. Doing this can actually make you over-produce oil and get oilier!

A simple, daily regimen that consists of a gentle cleanser, moisturizer, eye cream, sunscreen, lip balm, and the occasional weekly scrub or mask. This will help keep your skin toned and even.

Exfoliate or mask at least 1-2 times a week to remove the dead skin cells and allow your products to "sink in" and work for you. Apply your moisturizer by gently pressing it into the face, dab on an eye cream with your ring finger around the orbital bone, press in your sunscreen, and apply a lip balm.

These steps are crucial, as they set the stage for how well your makeup will wear on your face. If your skin is dry and dehydrated, then you will actually absorb all the moisture from your makeup and leave your face looking cakey.

Lastly, apply a primer based on your needs. Want to look smooth, matte or glowy? Primer helps keep your foundation on by acting as barrier and "base" for your foundation to rest on.

2.Dry or dehydrated skin types should go for a satin/natural or glowy finish. Oily skin types should use mattes/semi-mattes to absorb excess oil, and combination skin types should lean towards whatever concern they wish to correct. Satin finishes are usually a happy medium.

3. Match your jaw line/neck because that's where you're going to be ending your foundation. Even colour-match your décolleté if you have major contrast. To avoid a mask-like effect never swatch your hands.

4. It depends on your skin and the overall look that you're going for. If want to completely cover problem skin, flat brushes are great for building coverage, but tedious to use and notorious for leaving streaks. Buffing gently with a fluffy brush afterwards or dabbing the product on with a damp sponge leaves you streak-free.

5. Never go to bed with makeup on, use skin care daily, and protect your skin from the sun.

Here are a few of my skincare tips that can help your skin look fresh and wonderful this fall:

Remove makeup as follows:

1. Use a gentle eye makeup remover, as the skin around the eyes if much thinner and more delicate than the rest of the face.

2. Always double cleanse the face. Our skin carries, throughout the day, both oil-based dirt (makeup) and water based dirt (skin secretions). Cleansing once will not effectively remove both types of debris from the skin.

First use a natural lightweight oil based cleanser for your first cleanse, to easily melt away makeup, without compromising the skin. For your second cleanse, use your skin condition specific cleanser.

Other Tips

Huge part of caring for the skin is eating a healthy and balanced diet. It can impact your digestion and ultimately show on your skin. Be sure to work in some variety of fruits and vegetables into your diet, and don't forget to drink plenty of water.

Stay hydrated. Your hydration can come in the form of water or add a slice of lemon for some extra flavor.

Treat your neck as part of your face routine. The neck area has thinner skin, and a lower threshold of moisture retention. Take your full routine of products to the neck also.

I love all these skincare tips. I am going to use these helpful tips as I continue to expand by beauty routine!

Your suggestions are always welcome, as I continue on my journey to live life to the fullest. Let's have the very best 2016!
