I love all things that smell pretty. My nose is in everything from lovely soaps, to the latest perfumes. Recently, I was lucky enough to speak with Takasago fragrance house to find out the latest trends for scents this spring.

What are the top perfume trends for spring?

A neo-freshness is emerging around two major trends: A new generation of citrus for men with grapefruit, listed as one of the "Seven Wonders of Barbados," coming with the yuzu and listea cubeba trend.

For women this new citrus generation is starring by the sweeter citrus note of mandarin that dominates spring fragrances this year. It may be paired with floral and woody notes or even a veritable fruit bowl.

Cold spices with pink berries and cardamom, called "the queen of spices."

White flowers are timeless, but nowadays after the opulence of the 80's and the transparency of the 90's, white flowers are evolving toward more solar and suave facets. This solar florality is accentuated with the sophisticated jasmin and the lush ylang ylang. In a masculine spirit, the solar orange flower brings uniqueness and strength to a perfume.

Dry woods remain very chic and sensual mixed with a floral iris note for instance or more fun and intense when they are paired with fashionable masculine fruits like apple, pineapple or coco.

What are some tips to help keep your scent fresh all day long?

To make your perfume last longer, spray it on the warmest body parts: inside of your wrist, the crook of your elbows, the back of your neck, behind your knees, and the inside of your ankles. Those pulse points generate more heat, which diffuses the fragrance across your entire body.

Don't rub wrists against each other, it would force the top notes to disappear faster than intended and make your fragrance not last as long.

In order to smell your fragrance during all the day, perfume all your accessories (scarf, jacket...)

How long does perfume last on the counter (if you are storing it in your bathroom or bedroom)?

Perfumes generally are not labeled with expiration dates, but they are not designed to provide indefinite use, their shelf life is about two years.

The best place to store fragrance is in a cool, dry spot like your bedroom away from windows. Bathrooms are not ideal storage locations because heat and humidity will lessen the quality of the fragrance.

How to care for your perfumes so they have a long shelf life?

The way you store perfume can impact its shelf life because heat, light and humidity make perfumes die out faster. Closets and dresser drawer are better alternatives to display the bottles on shelves, counters or vanities.

Make sure the lid of your perfume is always twisted on as tightly as possible to protect the scent.

Any other tips or tricks on trends for perfumes?

Personalization is the marketing phenomenon of the moment, cultivating the principle of exclusivity and rarity. It is really appreciated in perfume as it allows today's consumers to create or sign their perfume, making it unique in a luxury spirit.

A popular practice is to have consumers' initials or desired message engraved on the bottle.

The do-it-yourself approach can also be associated with layering, a luxurious ritual inspired by the oriental tradition of combining and layering scents. Those perfumes can be used alone applied to pulse points or layered to create a new taylormade fragrant experience.

Finally, beautiful and rare perfumery ingredients, like "rose de mai", tonka bean, sandalwood or vetiver are put on the limelight. Born in niche perfumery, this trend is spreading to selective perfumery.

I will continue to enjoy pretty scents and share my experiences. If you have ideas or questions about perfumes please leave a comment below and I will do my best to find the answer for you.

Your suggestions are always welcome, as I continue on my journey to enjoy life to the fullest. Let's have the very best 2015!
