Music Is My Church

Posted: 08/16/2012 7:07 am

Music is life. Melody and song have been the golden threads woven into and through the fabric of my time on this earth. Its powerful energy runs through us all, underneath, like the ocean at times quiet and calm and then raucous and wild, joyous, or raging with fury mirroring all our many moods and helping us feel, hear and tell our stories.

Music is about connecting to ourselves, to each other, sharing, and being, for even a moment, part of something much bigger -- creating communities of like minds and spirits; allowing that weight we carry to feel a little lighter, for the joy we grasp to last a little longer and for the pain we all endure to be understood a little better. Music is my church.

As a child, I was insecure and didn't fit in and became a target. I was bullied and much of the time I was left to fend for myself so music became my saviour, my solace. It was the one thing I knew I was good at; it fed me and kept me going; it was a friend whenever I was in need. I truly don't know what I would have done without music in my life when I was growing up.

The studies regarding the far-reaching benefits of music are everywhere, citing improved test scores including math and science, better class attendance and day-to-day behavior. Yet, with all this data in front of us that clearly highlights the importance of music programs, both Canada and the United States are cutting access to music and the arts like never before. The headline of "Budget Cuts: No More Music" has played on for too long as those most affected are children with few resources and little to no access to alternatives.

I have been truly blessed in my life with the opportunities music has provided me and one of my ways of thanking the universe was to open the Sarah McLachlan School of Music. Our free after-school program provides underserved and at-risk children who have very little or no access to music. It's a program designed to build self-esteem and foster creativity through the power of song and sound. Students are taught in an environment of respect and equality.

This isn't American Idol-style where children compete against each other or only the most talented are accepted. We collaborate with local teachers and schools to identify children in Grades 4-12 who will most benefit by our program. No music experience is required. It's an amazing gift to see students develop a love of learning music and to watch their burgeoning pride as they begin to realize their potential. They believe in their talents, in their accomplishments, in themselves, and they're gaining the confidence to go after their dreams. I am thrilled to know that I'm able to offer something truly meaningful to this emerging generation.

For the first 9 years we were partnered with a wonderful arts organization, Vancouver's Arts Umbrella, and went through a few temporary spaces that never fully suited our needs. Then, with the impetus of a wonderful new space donated by the Wolverton Foundation that we could call our permanent home we decided to end the partnership and go out on our own.

We now have our own school to house and support our growing student base and outreach programs. We have found alternative methods of funding by sharing our story with others who share our vision as well as putting on a benefit concert "Voices in the Park" this September in Vancouver. Artists Stevie Nicks, Bryan Adams, Jann Arden, Hedley and more will join me to share what music means to them and we will be joined by the students of the Sarah McLachlan School of Music.

I know when I think about the immense gift music has been for me throughout my life and as I watch the excited students walk out on that stage filled with anticipation and promise it will serve as a reminder of why this program and arts education is so very important.

Kudos to you Sarah for stepping up and filling the void, but the rest of us need to keep pushing the arts in public schools so there isn't a void. As an American all I hear lately is "we have to improve in science and math" and I shake my head--there is no one path to a successful education, to teaching students how to think critically, which should be the goal of education, rather than hitting a mark on some standardized test. We ignore the arts at our own great peril.

Thank you, Sarah McLachlan for this post, your ever present art in the choice of your words, and your dedication to the causes you believe in. A beautiful woman, who writes and sings beautiful music, AND shares her money, time, and beauty with others is such a pleasure and joy. I remember many years ago, reading about your work with World Vision and a documentary on AIDS in Thailand, Laos and Cambodia. I began to dig deeper into your album, "Solace." I kept the words to the music by my side and would read them as I listened. It opened my life. I got my first record player at age 5, my first full stereo at age 10. Music has always been a very important. However, before "Solace," it was something I just enjoyed, but never had such a strong connection. Over the next 6 months, I dissected each song, the lyrics, your emotion 1000 different times, 100 different ways. It felt like a lotus blossoming within me. A beautiful awakening! Then I heard you speak of the song, "Sweet Surrender," and writing it after seeing the movie, "Leaving Las Vegas." I was confused. What I had seen as one of the most depressing movies in my entire life, you found love and beauty. Music has forever changed my life now. You and your music were the oracle in realizing true beauty and meaning in life.

Sarah, when I was in high school in the late 90s, I was very depressed and felt very out of place. It felt like I couldn't even breathe at times. I found the most comfort in listening to music, especially yours. I once said, regarding you, "Music was my breath, and Sarah breathed it for me." Thank you so much. I don't think I would even be alive today if it weren't for your music. It was so healing, comforting, nurturing, etc., everything I needed and couldn't get elsewhere. Anyway, thank you.

Good for you Ms. McLachlan! I absolutely agree with you. 15 years ago, I met a child named Dasha. She had just lost her father to a heart attack. In fact she saw her dad died and was traumatized. When I met her and her mother, Dasha only would speak to her mom, no one else. I fell in love with her mother and began to support both mother and child. One day, at the age of 4, I witnessed Dasha playing and dancing with a tambourine. I was quite intrigued. Being a former theatre director, I gave her an exercise which I only had given to my actors. Of course, I did not tell Dasha that this was an "exercise," She was able to incorporate my instructions immediately without literally missing a beat. I told her mother that her daughter was very talented. I began looking for schools and found a pre-conservatory public school which, at that time, was unique in the U.S. It combined pre-conservatory curriculum with a high level of academics. Dasha passed the auditions and was chosen amongst 24 other children. There were thousands of applicants. That was the beginning of Dasha's academic/musical life. Today, that four year old is now 19 and she goes to Princeton University on a full scholarship. This year she won two concerto competitions, one at Princeton and the other in New York City. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jack-schimmelman/immigration_b_823419.html

Thanks for sharing, Sarah! It is truly a delight and inspiration to see a celebrated artist roll up their sleeves and give back to the community that helped to put them where they are now. Kudos! The kids are truly blessed to have your focus and attention. It really means alot to have a "hero" reach out a hand and personally touch your life. The ripple affect will go on, even beyond your life, to benefit future generations with this gift. I hope that your example will goad more artists to find their niche and share what they can with "the little people on the other side of the tracks."

I can't begin to describe the immense gift YOUR music has been for me throughout my life. Wish I could be in Vancouver for "Voices in the Park" - sounds like it will be a phenomenal show for a great cause.

A wonderful article about how music transcends a simple interest; it is part of who we are, how we shape ourselves and how music is a powerful way to share our individual experiences with the community and potentially the whole world!
