Canada Is Letting White Supremacists Get Away With Murder

Posted: 02/ 2/2012 1:11 pm

Can hacking ever be justified for the good of society?

Tentatively, yes. But only when the government fails to protect its citizens.

Recently, European hackers leaked the names and personal information of scores of alleged white supremacists living in Canada.

In an interview with CBC, University of Winnipeg sociology professor Helmut-Harry Loewen lauded the results, claiming, "We can now begin to piece together a more accurate picture in terms of the distribution of these types of racist groups across Canada." The exposure of these individuals and groups, he argues, represents a severe blow to how these groups organize and where they are located.

Canadians shouldn't be shocked that white supremacist groups such as Volksfront and Blood and Honour are able to thrive in our "home and native land." Indeed, in December, three alleged members of Blood and Honour were charged with attacking five individuals of visible minority status.

But if this incident is indeed a blow, as Loewen asserts, the hackers haven't merely (and controversially) exposed the personal information of members of white supremacist organizations.

Rather, they've unearthed a more serious problem: The federal government is clearly not doing its job in fighting racism and discrimination.

In fact, under the Harper government, hate crimes have only risen in recent years.

According to Statistics Canada, there was a 42 per cent increase in hate crimes in 2009, which followed a 35 per cent increase in the preceding year. While the majority of these crimes were fueled by racial and ethnic markers, religiously-motivated hate crimes rose 55 per cent, with attacks against Jews (70 per cent) leading the way by a far margin.

Let's not forget the 13 per cent attacked for their sexual orientation, or the fact that homophobic and sexual harassment is an integral part of the Canadian educational experience. Given that these statistics rely on police data, we can safely assume that many other attacks cannot be accounted for.

These attacks are not occurring in the country's backwaters, but in large, pluralistic metropolitan areas: Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, and Kitchener-Waterloo-Cambridge.

Statistics Canada reported these most recent figures back in June 2011.

Why, in 2012, should the location of white supremacists come as a surprise, let alone a blow? After all, despite the limitless geographic possibilities that online networking offers, shouldn't we expect a correlation between the number of attacks in a city and the number of self-identified white supremacists living there? Shouldn't federal funding, in turn, be earmarked to fund anti-discrimination policies and practices in these areas?

Canada is not the tolerant country Canadians like to believe it is. I was shocked to hear it described as "racist," "xenophobic," and "homophobic" in both interviews on the BBC and on the streets of major American cities.

If the current government does not actively do more to combat these kinds of groups, hate crimes will increase.

If citizens do not hold the government accountable, hate crimes will increase.

If these hate crimes continue to increase, Canada will cease to be the safe and tolerant country of our ideals.

In the interim, I salute the hackers who have made the discrepancy between our national ideals and reality clear to us all.

Personally I'd rather have some SHARPS or Redskins around. They're more likely to step in and help then the police are.

I agree with the topic, the government must take decisive action against the recent rise in hate crimes in our country before it gets out of hand.

Why shouldn't governments want to keep tabs on the activities of organizations that advocate white supremacy and Neo-Nazism?

After all, don't many countries have policies that require convicted sex offenders, such as pedophiles, to register their whereabouts so society can protect potential victims from their activities?

And since the Nazis accomplished the near-extermination of millions of Europeans, especially Jews, homosexual people, gypsies, and communists, why shouldn't there be an expectation that groups that admire the Nazis' beliefs want to accomplish the same despicable deeds?

there's seems to be some confusion here about freedom of speech. canada's freedom of speech laws (unlike those of the u.s.), found in the criminal code of canada and in the human rights act, prohibit "hate propaganda." the human rights act specifically forbids the posting of hateful messages on the internet (check out the wiki section on hate crimes in canada).
ann coulter was sent a letter by the gov't, stating:
For example, promoting hatred against any identifiable group would not only be considered inappropriate, but could in fact lead to criminal charges. Outside of the criminal realm, Canadian defamation laws also limit freedom of expression and may differ somewhat from those to which you are accustomed. I therefore ask you, while you are a guest on our campus, to weigh your words with respect and civility in mind.

For someone with a PhD , myself I have BhS. Your column is quite over the top targetting white supremists. Where was the Murder? Using inuendos would not be tolerated in a grade 8 class. I suggest you take your bogus PhD and give it back , you must have slept with someone to get it.

Shayna is not a PhD yet. So read more carefully, Hal. It seems your mind was made up before you read her article! It is called Pre+judice.
BTW: Racists and supremacists come in ALL colours. Shayna's issue is the often open violence in the name of whiteness. Non-whites are no better--BUT there is NO EXCUSE for inter-ethnic violence. NONE!

Hey violence is bad no matter what the reason except for self defence. She has a prejudice against white people as a lot of white people do. I have talked to white supremists and she mite be surprised of how reasonable some of them actually are. This may be a race war but it is being fought by extremists of all races. And all races are racists only individuals that believe in Live And Let Live are not.
12:10 PM on 02/03/2012
It's racist to think that hate crimes are commited by white people only. You are missing too many facts to carry this argument.

When people all over the world actually kill each other for reasons of race or other reasons i find your page title disrespectful. That very rarely happens in Canada.

This article is biased and lacking in facts. Assumptions are best left to the white supremists...

her article is about 'white supremacists' not 'WHITE PEOPLE' so get off your high horse and walk on earth. Cut the denial and do the research before posting your bogus and untrue facts.

ps: you've spelled supremists wrong, it is spelled supremacists
07:25 PM on 02/03/2012
You come here correcting spelling and ask me to get of my high horse? You new to the internet?

I haven't posted any facts, just asking to see hers. I want to see the murder that could have been stopped by the police chasing internet bigots...

If you fully understand my point you would not have commented on it, i suggest trying harder to understand the message before looking for spelling errors.

"Canada is not the tolerant country Canadians like to believe it is. I was shocked to hear it described as "racist," "xenophobic," and "homophobic" in both interviews on the BBC and on the streets of major American cities. "

This is fear mongering(lol sp) and plain old fasion propagandi, what is the source, who are these people? Why do we care what they think?

Chasing internt ghosts isn't the answer, actually police work and education would do much more than tracking a couple of IP addys.

"I salute the hackers who have made the discrepancy between our national ideals and reality clear to us all."

How intrusive do you suggest the government needs to be and how do you distinguish between "hate speech" and "free speech"?
10:54 AM on 02/03/2012
Don't let this article confuse you. Sure there are "white supremacists" killing others. If you were to do real research you would find that there are hundreds of gangs in Canada. The majority of them are made up of new immigrants and offspring of immigrants. It really started to take off after the Vietnam war when Canada let thousands of Vietnamese into the country. These gangs are mostly Asian, mid eastern countries,Russians, Muslims etc. My ancestors have been in Canada since the late 1800's. In that time when immigrants came to Canada they left their troubles behind and assimilated as one. To get rid of the gang problem, get rid of the immigrant problem. As usual I could care less if any one thinks negatively of my comments.

"As usual I could care less if any one thinks negatively of my comments. "
Actually if you have to write it, it would indicate otherwise.
Sure there is nothing better than an old immigrant to put down a new one. LOL!

And as usual I am LOL

First off I enjoyed the majority of your post ... But here's where I can't agree, your assertion that an increase in hate crimes can only be linked to an increase in self identified white supremacists per area. That in itself is racially biased considering that all cultures have the easy ability to commit a hate crime ... Muslims against Jews ... Jews against Muslims... Irish Catholics against Irish Protestants etc etc and let's not forget that a hate crime also includes sexual orientation based hate and let's face it there are a lot of people who are homophobic to the extreme. It is foolish to suggest that only white supremacists have the capacity for hate crimes when in our multi cultural Canada the finger of hate points in all directions.

So, what exactly do you expect the government to do??

You have heard of the concept of freedom of speech?

Personally, I am not particularly in a rush for the government to start prosecuting Thought Crime.

When the haters act out, that is a different matter.
09:02 AM on 02/03/2012
I here you loud and clear friend, I haven't been a fan of the Hate Crimes Laws; but when do you suppose freedom of speech turns into a Hate Crime? Who decides that? I suppose a judge, and police discretion? Not a fan of this. IMO I feel you should be able to say anything without worry of the government. Unless a direct threat is made. Then police should investigate.
09:30 AM on 02/03/2012
Wow... ok.. first of all, its not laws that reduce hate crime, its policies that educate that reduce hate crimes. Our Government has an obligation to make sure that those policies are front and center in a responsible society. Its not an assault on free speech, its a lesson in morality. You have every right to think like a racist, if that's the poor way you were brought up, but you have NO right to take those thoughts and attack someone else verbally or physically. Your right to be an A$$----, does NOT supersede someone's right to feel safe.
