“Correction ... Flaherty's the man who blew through a hefty surplus, blew billions buying votes, aided and abetted the fraudulent misappropriation of 50 million to help Tony buy his re-election and who ran our finances into the ground.

All due respect to his family, they lost a father, brother and friend, however, he did NOT deserve a state funeral. Neither did Jack Layton. On the other hand Herb Grey deserved far better treatment than he got from the Reformer's.”

The Robocall Verdict Isn't the End of 2011 Election Fraud

Commented Aug 14, 2014 at 17:31:52 in Canada Politics

“Agreed. The first order of business is to repeal the unFair Elections Act. Second order of business is to call an independent inquiry to look into all violations of the EA including overspending, robocalls (including those covered by the CRTC) using Senator's to campaign on the public dime (to make sure those charges are included in the party and candidates spending with the power to charges violator's changes as well as to make recommendations on changes to the EA and the legislation governing the CRTC to deal with them.

Following that a independent non-partisan panel should immediately begin examining the EA in it's entirely and our voting system itself.”

“lol ... Actually, I have no doubts I could have done a better job than Flaherty, he made numerous bad choices starting from the day he took office (GST cut, raised personal taxes and allowed sub-prime loans all in the first year). We were in a deficit position even before the recession, one anyone paying attention knew about, except Harper and Flaherty.

He and Harris ran Ontario into the ground with the same voodoo economics and then Harper made him Finance Minister so he could do the same thing at the federal level.”

“Harper wanted a deal for appearance sake at home here in Canada more than he wanted to make the best deal for Canada and Canadian's. As a result I am not at all surprised he caved in on the points mentioned in this article. I didn't and still don't like NAFTA, Mulroney caved on a number of significant issues as well, however, having said that I will await a fuller analysis from a variety of perspectives before wading in on this deal. His proposed deals with China and the other with the Asian block of countries are equally problematic, imho, and he isn't sharing anything there either.

Bottom line for me is that I am more interested in FAIR trade deals than FREE trade deals that inevitably result in more jobs going overseas, work being outsourced and our giving up aspects of our sovereignty to foreign interests.”

“Harper made a patently false statement about "his stimulus package" having helped us recover the jobs lost after the recession. It was numbers from Stats Canada that exposed his statement to be a big lie. Not only were the jobs not recovered many of those that were created were McJobs without benefits and/or part time. They didn't even remotely compare to the jobs lost. And we are still at post recession employment numbers today.

Harper then went after Stats Canada and destroyed first the long form census and then installed a PMO puppet to head the organization. Stats Canada, which was considered one of the best census and stats organizations on the planet has been going steadily downhill ever since. This error is likely a consequence of the this as well.”

“I simply stated a fact, and it explains why the Reformer's continually use fear based politics and dredge up false dichotomies to scare people. They have used the "you are with us or with " line in their statements and ads frequently, not the other parties.

And I did not make a false statement. I didn't state that EVERY conservative has a lower IQ because there are liberal minded people who have lower IQ's as well. However, the average conservative minded person DOES have a lower IQ than the average liberal minded person. if you don't like it that's not my problem.

And did I suggest they shouldn't have the right to vote? No.”

Naturally Skeptical on Aug 13, 2014 at 19:27:24

“Please re-read my last sentence - I said the right to THEIR vote. I did not say anything about the right to vote. There is a difference. A for blanket statement - yes, you tarred all right-wingers with one brush. I prefer to respect people's right to vote as they wish without resorting to calling them down because they don't vote the same way that I vote.”

The conservative mind is more fearful (relies more heavily on the amygdala), deals more poorly with context, and has a measurably lower IQ, that's a fact.”

Canada's Manufacturing Crisis Worst Among 19 Industrialized Countries

Commented Aug 8, 2014 at 23:03:12 in Canada Business

“They can do plenty. The mistakes started the day Harper took office.

The GST cut was a dumb move and cost us. It helps ONLY those who have disposable income to spend and this hurt us even more with the recession as people had less disposable income to spend. Those who could afford it would have spent that money anyways. An income tax break would have resulted in more spending on goods. This helps companies immensely unlike the GST cut.

He spent more on the stimulus package than the opposition called for but wasted over 1/2 of it (20+B on vote buying projects) and NOT infrastructure. Spending on the later creates real jobs in Canada, many in the manufacturing area.

His corporate tax cuts were banked taking close to 200B out of the economy. Cuts should have been tied to job creation, R&D, training and/or capital expenditures including R&D. This would have helped manufacturing immensely. Further, he should have given more tax breaks to small to mid sized companies, a core part of our manufacturing sector.

Harper has done what Mulroney did, namely free trade and NOT fair trade deals. This hurts Canadian manufacturers.

He gives billions to the resource sector but very little to the manufacturing centre

His boutique tax cuts have favoured people in resource based provinces (western) which means the money does not go to manufacturing centres.

His increases EI premiums has taken more money out peoples pockets.”

“That doesn't change the fact that he has done little to nothing for manufacturing in Canada since taking office. Yes, the provinces certainly have a role, but Harper fails there too because he doesn't try to take a leadership role and get everyone on board. He only cares about Alberta/Sask, and while it benefits us here in Alberta, $ wise, it hasn't helped Canada overall. And I am a Canadian, first, foremost and only, I just happen to live in Alberta.”
