“@ sordo44 you're right, particularly about the "off label" use of antidepressants for pain. I am a perfect example. I suffer from two chronic conditions, both of which leave me bedridden and in great pain, sometimes for days (or weeks) at a time.

Usually, the treatment for pain management is doctor prescribed controlled opioid narcotics. This often means a morphine or fentanyl patch. I, unfortunately, am very allergic to these meds (I can only use extra strength ibuprofen in very small doses), so my doctor prescribed a daily combination of antidepressants w/ a muscle relaxant. This is ok when I'm not fighting and/or in the throes of a flare up, however, the side effects suck (I am alway exhausted) but I don't really have other options at the moment so I try to maintain a positive outlook. Lemons = lemonade and all that.”

“I am paying for your cigarettes. Maybe not today or tomorrow, but down the road, when you are suffering with the illnesses and diseases caused by smoking cigarettes.

If given a choice, I would rather my tax dollars go toward helping those addicts who are trapped in the hell that is their lives! In addition, many of today's addicts are self-medicating a variety of mental illnesses because provincial and federal budgets have slashed and burned treatment. So, while I sincerely hope my tax dollars are NOT paying for your future health issues caused by you smoking cigarettes, I will accept that you are just another drug addict who requires treatment.”

Wildaboutcanadageese on Nov 20, 2013 at 23:58:41

“HP didn't see fit to print my other comment which is someone who smokes a pack a day pays almost 4,000 a year in taxes here...a smoker who smokes 40 years pays 160,000 in taxes. Only 20% of smokers develop a serious smoking related illness. That is 20 out of 100. So no, smokers are pretty well subsidizing their own habit. And certainly a lot more than the junk food crowd.”

Wildaboutcanadageese on Nov 20, 2013 at 10:35:32

“Interesting you think these addicts are self medicating but smokers aren't. How does that work?? Do you know, like, anything about nicotine addiction?”

Wildaboutcanadageese on Nov 20, 2013 at 10:32:57

“No, you are NOT paying for my cigarettes in any way shape or form. Nice try though. In one year a pack a day smoker here pays about 4,000 a year in taxes; in 40 years that is about a pack a day smoker here pays about 160,000. Only 20%, that is 20 out of 100, smokers ever develop a serious smoking related illness. So NO, smokers are paying their own cost.

And who pays for all the pigs with diet related illnesses?”

“I know, right?  Other than John Keynes (whose mixed economics model has clearly been theoretical rather than practical since Reaganomics perhaps), I can't really think of any economist who has contributed to the greater good of society.

As far as being a Friedman fan, Chile was just the first big test.  Think South Africa, Falklands, South and Central America, Hurricane Katrina and the meltdown of the Asian financial markets in the late 90's.  "Shock Doctrine" was applied and laissez-faire capitalism gave us the foundation for what we have now.

A good example of free market reform is Bolivia. Morales is my  hero!  You can't privatize the collection of rain water!!  WTF is up with that???  Anyway, you're very welcome Harry Nuggets!!  Read the book or watch the movie... it seriously changed my whole outlook on the intersection of government, the private sector and society!!  PS:  I also started looking into decentralized crypto-currency (such as bitcoin) a wee bit more seriously.”

“There is a great documentary on Kenyes from the BBC series Master of Money.  You can get ahold of it on Youtube. The same series also has one on Marx and Hayek. ”

“I wondered the same thing re: Pinochet, although, I'm sure many of the neocons don't even know about Milton Friedman and the Chicago School of Economics. Chile and Pinochet were the testing ground for Friedman's theory of "disaster capitalism", which, proved to be a resounding success.

I highly suggest, to anyone interested in the history, the book "The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism". It is a 2007 book by the Canadian author Naomi Klein. It was also the basis for a documentary by the same name.

From Wikipedia:

The book argues that the free market policies of Nobel Laureate Milton Friedman have risen to prominence in some countries because of a deliberate strategy of certain leaders to exploit crises by pushing through controversial, exploitative policies while citizens were too busy emotionally and physically reeling from disasters or upheavals to create an effective resistance. It is implied that some man-made crises, such as the Iraq war, may have been created with the intention of pushing through these unpopular reforms in their wake.”

Harry Nuggets on Oct 17, 2013 at 13:40:50

“Cripes I did not know Friedman won the Nobel.  In my opinion no economist should, they aren't really much more than shamans reading entrails.  Unfortunatetly amoral political types hide behind their theories as the consolidate their and their class' hold on power.  When it comes to his "successes" Friedman should be thrown in the same garbage bin as Marx.  I did not know the Chilean junta were a fan of Friedman, a lot of rather revolting people are, I'm going to look a bit more into it...thanks BarbinVanGroovy. ”

“I am happy this man was fortunate enough to be rescued! I agree that anyone who requires the services of search and rescue teams should pay back the actual costs involved, especially if they deliberately put themselves in peril by skiing, snowboarding, camping, hiking, boating, etc. in areas deemed to be high risk.

If, however, they wind up accidentally lost or at the mercy of the elements because of some situation beyond their control, volunteering in some capacity seems appropriate. Fundraising would also work well.

Seeing this fellow works in the banking industry and made reference to the members of the rescue team being "givers not takers", I wonder if he was an Ayn Rand disciple prior to his experience?”

This has been fun! Nostalgia is a welcome distraction from our current situation where Canada is quickly becoming unrecognizable (as promised by - him... I don't even want to tap his name or party).

For anyone interested in more quaint distraction, there is a documentary on Canadian Netflix made by the NFB for Canada's Centennial that follows a helicopter from coast to coast... It is quite short but beautifully filmed... An interesting reminder of a bygone time or the starting ground for some of what we're seeing now?”
