Paul Krugman Calls Niall Ferguson's Latest Attack 'Pathetic'

“Ferguson is a pop intellectual, not a real one. He goes on television and does this great impersonation of someone who knows what they're talking about.”

“Correct. Supply side management. They (the Diary Board) limit the supply of milk and milk products in the market, thereby controlling the price. As such, they are guaranteed approximately a 25% profit margin. Frozen pizza makers in Canada (i.e. McCain's) get a special deal on cheese in order to compete with their American counterparts.

There is no free market when it comes to dairy products in Canada.

Compare the price of pizza (not frozen, but takeout) to what you would pay in the US. My step-son's who are American and come here to visit over the holidays laugh at both the size and price of Pizza's here. Most of the cost is associated with the cost of the cheese they have to pay.”

sgillhoolley on Jan 31, 2013 at 12:34:17

“That is like Japan and rice. The farmers have a great deal of political control, and they force the price to go very high. A bag that cost us about $20 would cost a Japanese person about $75. And the Japanese eat rice three times a day. It is far more of a staple than milk is to us.”

House Prices: Canada's Residential Real Estate Severely Overvalued, The Economist Says

Commented Jan 12, 2013 at 10:07:11 in Canada Business

“Looking at the average cost of a house in my area (Ottawa and environs), it is easy to see that the prices being asked far outweighs the actual values of the home. A town home that would normally go for $250 000 is now going for over 350 000. And with this you get a single car garage that you can barely fit a standard vehicle, and next to no yard!

Talk about overpriced. I laugh at what the sellers are asking.”

Why Are Prices Higher In Canada Than In The U.S.? E-Book Industry Bets You're Willing To Pay

Commented Dec 19, 2012 at 13:01:45 in Canada Business

“I already put pressure on Canadian retailers: where ever possible, I take my money south of the border. Sorry, but I have had it with the ol' "But this is the price we pay for being Canadian" spiel, etc. It is time that Canadian retailers learn what real competition is. They need to be able to compete globally, not just locally. Having our dollar at near parity has shed light on the real reasons prices are higher in Canada. For too long our retailers have relied on the high American dollar scapegoat to justify their higher prices.

So, I vote with my cheque book and take my money where they truly value the customer and do all they can to keep your business, in the USA. My Canadian nationalism ends at my wallet.”

“While I am no fan of the Conservatives, they got this one right. This needed to be done in order to ensure that Canada does not go through what happened in the States. There was a housing bubble developing here in Canada with a real risk of failure. Better a slow and moderate decline in housing prices then a crash. When the cost of housing begins to outstrip the average income level, you know you have a problem.

I would like to see some changes in the home ownership rules for foreign buyers, like those implemented in Australia, in order to curb domestic housing price manipulation by foreign real estate speculators.”

Commented Nov 9, 2012 at 14:08:34 in Politics

“"Instead of discussing raising any taxes, Boehner said that President Barack Obama and Democrats should work with Republicans to come up with a tax-reform plan that cuts taxes, eliminates loopholes and makes the system simpler. That, Boehner argued, will lead to more revenue through increased economic activity. At the same time, Republicans argue, more budget cutting needs to be done, especially through changes to Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security."

Wait, didn't the Republican party run on this same platform and just loose the presidential election?”

“Note to author of the article, Canada's healthcare is not 'free'. We pay for it through our taxes. For me, I believe it works out to about $400.00 a year (give or take). It varies by Province.

For myself, I find this fixation on the War of 1812 to be quite comical. We don't have the military personnel or equipment to defend, let alone patrol, our own shores (Atlantic, Pacific & Arctic), so how we can be seen as being 'muscular' is pretty much a joke. Did I ever tell you the story about one of our submarines catching fire which we had recently purchased from the British?”

“I agree with the sentiments expressed. We are already aware that the level of media concentration is well above those of other OECD countries, even the US. I fail to see how this will benefit the Canadian Consumer.

What would benefit the Canadian consumer is the decoupling of the service providers from the content providers. For example, Bell, Rogers, etc. have no incentive to offer internet service that would in anyway threaten their own cable/satellite/IPTV offerings, hence the low caps they place on bandwidth for their internet services.”

“This reminds me of the head of Indigo Books unilaterally deciding that they would stop selling Mein Kampft because in her mind, it constituted hate speech. This is a historical document, no matter how distasteful or repugnant the ideas it expounds.

Unless there is a law (like in Germany, for example) expressly forbidding the sale of this product, I don't see what the big deal is. I thought we lived in a free society? If you do not allow for the free expression and exchange of ideas, especially those you find the most distasteful or repugnant to your own views, then you cannot claim to actually live in a free society.

Having said this, who in the right mind (pardon the pun) would want to purchase and actually wear this type of t-shirt? I agree with Johnny LaRue (great John Candy character!), in that it makes no sense to me. However, just because it makes no sense to either me or Johnny, it does not mean that the store should be stopped from selling them if they wish to do so.”

Classical Music: To Clap or Not to Clap (CHANGE MY MIND)

“As a lover of both 'classical' and 'jazz' I am often reminded of the recording of Mingus chastising his audience for 'clinking' their glasses, etc. while the musicians were playing.

Quite frankly, I prefer to subscribe and adhere to musical traditions and norms. And if anyone thinks that the reason why classical music is in decline is due to not being allowed to clap between movements during live concerts, they need to rethink this rather simplistic attitude and focus on the assault music education is under in schools today.”

My favorite was good old Erroll Garner "Concert By The Sea" Many years ago i was on Main street in Buzzard's Bay Mass and heard tremendous awesome chords coming from inside the Blue Moon Cafe. Went inside and there was Fats Waller's son on the piano. Fantastic. “I don't think it is a fair comparison (auto makers & RIM). RIM's difficulties are of their own making and that of a changing market place, work place environment. The reality is that IT departments in the corporate world are allowing personal smartphones to operate on their corporate networks more and more. The one selling point that RIM had over others, secure endpoint to endpoint encryption, is no longer the competitive advantage as it once was. They need to open up their network to Android, etc. Of course, it may be a case of too little, too late, at this point.”
