Your right about BC citizens talking about separation, I heard people saying we would be a lot better off if we did separate. BC could become one of the riches and greenest countries in the world.

We do not want 500 super tankers added to our beautiful coasts what so ever. Those super tankers are capable of carry up to 2 million barrels (320,000 m3) of that filthy Alberta oil.”

“With over 800 oil spills since 1999, Enbridge has proven itself to be an incompetent company with an irresponsible cowboy culture. Now they have resorted to outright lies in their attempt to sell their dangerous proposal.

BC must never entrust its environmental, economic, and employment future to this bunch. One oil spill, and there will be spills, would wipe out more jobs and businesses in fisheries, tourism, ecotourism, and support industries than Northern Gateway could ever create. The Enbridge scheme is just too big a gamble for BC, with almost no rewards.”

Oil Spill Risk May Rise In Northwest With Exports Of Coal And Tar Sands Oil To Asia

Commented Apr 25, 2012 at 18:20:57 in Green

“For decades coastal British Columbia has successfully and profitably attracted tourists, new residents, and business investors by marketing the beauty and purity of our maritime environment. Now the south coast is threatened by Kinder Morgan's expansion proposal, and the central coast is under attack by Enbridge's Northern Gateway scheme.

Their huge tankers -- operating in narrow, crowded, reef-strewn passages, often with high winds and wave heights -- would put our unpolluted coastal environment, and the tens of thousands of jobs that depend on it, at serious risk 24/7 for decades to come. One spill -- and there will be spills -- would be catastrophic to businesses, workers, communities, and our priceless natural environment. The industry considers a 15% recovery of any spilled oil to be "good".

And for what? To move Canada's oil reserves in the form of toxic bitumen to China to benefit the mainly foreign investors who own Alberta's tar sands, while Quebec and the Maritimes are still completely dependent on foreign oil.

Both projects carry far too much risk in exchange for minuscule rewards. Tell the Harper government to send the oil south via the Keystone line that the US will surely approve this year, and to run a pipeline east to take care of eastern Canada's needs.

Harper has relinquished decision-making about energy, resource development, and environmental monitoring over the his cronies in big oil and China; it's time for Canadians to take back control of our country by saying no to Kinder Morgan and Enbridge.”

There are approx. 270,000,000 guns in the U.S. and only a handful are used for crimes compared to the total. If you'll notice, most of these massacres are being committed by young adults who are loners, outcasts, and/or have obvious mental issues. How about we focus on fixing them instead of penalizing legal, responsible gun owners?”

Enbridge Elk Point Spill Pumps About 230,000 Litres Of Heavy Crude In Alberta

Commented Jun 19, 2012 at 19:27:29 in Canada Business

“Enbridge's promises that its Northern Gateway double pipeline would be "safe" are utterly false, as proven by their constant spills, and their inability to clean them up.

Add to their leaky pipelines the fact that sooner or later one of their supertankers will go aground in treacherous Douglas Channel or Hecate Straight, releasing millions of barrels of toxic crude, and it spells disaster for BC's residents and communities, its water supplies, its fishing, tourism, ecotourism industries--and its reputation as an especially beautiful place to live.

The number of permanent jobs Northern Gateway would create equals the staff of one Canadian Tire store. And of course all the oil goes to China while half of Canada still imports oil from foreign sources, and most of the profits go to the foreigners who own the tar sands.

The Enbridge scheme is simply too much risk for too little reward, and should not be built.”

Northern Gateway Pipeline: Harper Says Canada Won't Be America's 'Giant National Park'

Commented Jan 17, 2012 at 12:04:59 in Canada Politics

“"Giant national park"? ‎"Foreign-backed groups"? Don't be deceived by Harper's phoney red herrings. Northern Gateway, if built, will turn BC's fish-bearing watersheds and pristine coastline into toxic bitumen sewers (there WILL be spills), costing thousands of jobs in tourism and the fisheries and billions in cleanup costs, all to make profits for the largely foreign, mainly Chinese owners of the Tar Sands.
BC assumes all the risk, for a few mainly short-term jobs, and billions of barrels of Canada's oil reserves exit our country unprocessed, leaving Quebec, the Maritimes, and eventually the whole country as importers of oil at much higher future prices. By every measure, including economics, this scheme is bad for Canada, particularly BC.”

TwoZeroOZ on Jan 17, 2012 at 12:39:01

“I agree that our dependence on oil is bad, and not only because of the inevitable spills. But I prefer a more realistic view. The move to renewable energy is already under way, and I think we can agree that it's only a matter of time before we switch to a renewable energy economy (20 years? 100 years?).

Knowing that, it makes the most "economic sense" for Canada to sell our oil reserves before this happens; before oil substantially loses its value. Even considering a broader world-view, it makes more environmental sense to transport oil from nearby sources, rather than from the middle east. It might be environmentally worse for Canada, but it's the best option for the planet.

Unless of course you know something I don't.”

Missouri 'Facebook Law' Limits Teacher-Student Interactions Online, Draws Criticism And Praise

Commented Aug 3, 2011 at 09:41:05 in Parents

“I taught at the high school and university levels for 40 years, and in retirement am now "friends" with dozens of former students, now adults, on Facebook.

If I were still teaching high school, though, I would not accept "friend" requests from students, and would explain to them that they have peers who are friends, as do I, and that our relationship is a working one centred around learning in the school context.

As a university teacher, I could see possible uses to creating a closed Facebook group to support communication or learning within a course, but would not be comfortable "befriending" students for social purposes.

My gut-check on this is, "Would I want our daughter "befriending" her high school teachers?" Definitely not. I'm not sure that a law is the answer, though, when sensible ethical practices would do.”
Rupert Murdoch Shows Us the Need for Government Oversight

Rupert Murdoch Shows Us the Need for Government Oversight

Commented Jul 20, 2011 at 22:41:52 in Media

“Up here in far-from-perfect Canada, we have at least one good bit of government regulation that would affect Murdoch's Fox News: it is not permissible to knowingly lie if you are a broadcaster.

If a Canadian television or radio outlet were to deliberately broadcast falsehoods, as Fox does purposely and systematically, they would be called before the Canadian Radio and Television Commission (CRTC) to explain why they should be allowed to retain their licence to broadcast. If they persisted in broadcasting lies, their licence would be rescinded.

This isn't a free speech issue: this is about having professional standards to ensure the responsible and honest use of the public airwaves and cable channels, the use of which is a privilege that carries with it certain responsibilities to the public good. Fox's attempt to polarize, distort, and poison the political process in the USA for its own profit and the political advantage of its rich friends would soon be shut down in Canada, as it should be in any country where broadcasting is properly regulated.”
