Smartphones Bring Hope, Frustration As Substitute For Computers

“When he started out, he was. Fahrenheit 451 was written on a rented typewriter at UCLA”

“Fair enough...although my point wasn't about his beginnings. You specifically pointed out that he had just died (a shame--he was a brilliant man) and he didn't have a computer or smartphone...I simply pointed out that he also wasn't poor...and thus, if he didn't own those things it was by choice and not because of economic hardship.”

“Ray Bradbury just died. Didn't have a computer, let alone a smartphone.”

“Well, these things hadn't been invented yet when he started writing, so what's your point? That's like in the year 2075 saying that somebody in 2012 didn't have a flying automobile.”

calluna on Jun 6, 2012 at 18:09:08

“No, but I'm sure he had a secretary to do his typing for him.

A wealthy 91-year old world-famous novelist is not necessarily analogous to a 27 year old community college student.”

Sony Stops Production Of Cassette Walkman

Sony Stops Production Of Cassette Walkman

Commented Oct 24, 2010 at 19:21:11 in Technology

“The fact that Sony owns various content providers was actually a problem. They fell over themselves trying to come up with draconian DRM systems for their products. Apple, meanwhile, recognized that consumers would only accept rights management if it was fairly hassle free.”

oxjr on Oct 24, 2010 at 20:57:30

“I so didn't pay attention back then - I didn't jump onto digital music until it was totally hassle free. Learned something today because of this thread - not only did Sony drop the ball - so did HP. HP had a 6mg hard drive player three years before Apple but never marketed it properly. By the time they understood its potential the iPod came out. They then screwed up a partnership with Apple to make a HP a unique version (remember - more people trusted PC brands) and HP was going to make Napster a legit provider. The HP ended up being just a rebadged iPod and HP just stuck with itunes - having cold feet with Napster.”
