'Caucasians' T-shirt Sales Spike Thanks To A Tribe Called Red Member (TWEET)

'Caucasians' T-shirt Sales Spike Thanks To A Tribe Called Red Member (TWEET)

Commented Jul 31, 2014 at 15:07:12 in Canada Music

“The thing is that people have called both shirts racist. The article itself points out that people have complained about the "Caucasians" shirt and called it racist. I feel neither shirt has anything about it that is offensive, and I suspect that's the whole point of the shirt. If a person is offended by the "Caucasians" shirt then maybe they'll take a second to realise how the "Indians" logo makes others feel.”

TwoZeroOZ on Aug 5, 2014 at 12:12:16

“Technically, the 'Caucasian' shirt is more likely to be racist than the Redskin one. I think we can all agree that the Redskin logo is not meant to be racist - it's simply a logo.

The Caucasian shirt, on the other hand, could very well have meant to be racist. The creator of this shirt incorrectly assumed the Redskin logo was racist, and thought he would make another racist shirt to point out the Redskin's racism. His intent to create a racist shirt would be clear.

To use an analogy; it would be like if an African-American came up to me and said "Hey buddy", and I (For whatever reason) assumed 'buddy' to be a racist term, and lashed out and called him the N-word. In my mind, they were both racist. To an objective observer, I was the only racist.”

“Well, if it was a parody of the Redskins logo, yes. "Indians" is more innacurate than offensive, Or perhaps "whiteys" for this one, "Carackers" for the Redskins... what works best for the Braves?”

“Of course, that's part of white priviledge. We get to ignore racism directed at us because it's a novel experience. That shirt is exactly as racist as the Cleveland Indians logo, for whatever worth that has.”

TwoZeroOZ on Jul 30, 2014 at 10:39:01

“Ah yes, that's what it must be, "white priviledge [sp]". LOL

Of course, your entire theory falls apart when you bring up the fact that it isn't racist to begin with :)

Perhaps you don't know what the word 'racist' means... Let me educate you:

"the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races."

So, if someone says "Your skin is white, therefore you're less of a human than I am", then that is racist. But someone saying just "Your skin is white" is simply not racist in the slightest. Neither is "Whitey", "cracker", "whiteskin", or any other synonym to the colour that you could imagine. Ditto for "redskin".

Now, this does get a little complicated when there is an implied conclusion of "I am calling you whiteskin, BECAUSE your skin is white and therefore I believe you're less of a human than I am". In other words, using any phrase as a means of derogation is racist, but using any word without derogation cannot possibly be racist.

In summary: A Redskin T-Shirt is not racist unless it's meant to be. A 'Caucasians' T-shirt is not racist unless it's meant to be. So yes, you're correct that both are equally racist: they are both equally not racist.

Feel free to ask if you have any other questions.”

“You see lots of natives wearing headdresses, do you? I don't and think that's part of the point. They tend to be worn very rarely by the chief of the tribe in ceremonial occasions. Once again, you seem bound and determined to miss any point being made out of desperate need to be contrary. I was also merely echoing what natives speaking on the subject have said. Are you telling me they're lying about this? Why would they? What facts do you possess that would prove this a lie?”

turkeylurky on Jul 25, 2014 at 16:12:14

“If you do some simple Google image searches, you'll find hundreds (if not thousands) of Native American children (from toddler size and up) wearing feather bonnets. I'm betting that not all those feathers were earned for bravery on the field of battle (potty training doesn't qualify)..”

In what military would the decedents of military medal winners be allowed to wear those medals?”

We know there's parts of this that give them rights above those of people and governments that represent them- but they don't want to hear from those people, they only want to hear one side of the story. How many good things come from that scenario?”

Governments
Corporations

Do you think you'll need to hire a lawyer and review the details of TPP before you go shopping for your groceries? No.

It's common practice for the government to only involve those directly affected. I don't know why you think the government would want ideas from Joe Schmoe off the street.”

There will be dozens, if not hundreds, of draft versions before the final copy is released to the public. Tell me, what is the point in releasing Draft #1, when by the time the Media starts making a stink about some mistake, you'll already be on Draft #20 and that mistake has already been fixed?

Global warming denialists(for conservatives) and anti-GMO advocates(for liberals) are still using talking points that were debunked YEARS ago. Our society doesn't care about the science, or the facts. They only care about the next thing to rant and rave against. If they didn't keep the draft versions secret, people would be protesting for years about dozens of different provisions despite the fact that they no longer exist.

You'll see one of the final versions, and that's really all that matters.”

“I've been in the stores. Tell me what makes a Luis Vitton handbag worth $1000? Is it the pattern (one of the ugliest patterns I've ever seen BTW) It can't be that it costs so much to make, since it costs less than $50 to actually manufacture those bags.

Sorry but as far as I can tell most of the cost in luxury goods is the name on the label, not the quality of the product. Spending money on quality makes sense but there's little evidence I've seen that this stuff has much more quality than products that cost half as much.”

PaulSmith1974 on Jul 2, 2014 at 20:12:07

“I'm assuming by "Luis Vitton" you meant "Louis Vuitton" . A bag has a lifetime warranty. If you have any issues with it, the company will replace it, or repair it.
As their goods are made in either France or Spain, there is no possible way one of their bags costs 50$ to make.”
