“Quite a talented young lady. Saw her in Prometheus and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, and very impressive in both - she commits to roles in a way few women in Hollywood do these days. Nice to see her doing well.”

“This doesn't take anything away from the ability to do her job. It doesn't say anything about Canada other than our commitment to be inclusive. Muslims aren't taking advantage of the rest of us, it's one piece of fabric. Anyone who sees it as an infringement on anything Canadian had better give their heads a shake and take a look around this incredibly, beautifully pluralistic country of ours.”

“The ladies in the ad Kang is talking about - those aren't just normal people who have some thickness to them. Those are clearly fat, unhealthy women. No one said everyone has to be skinny. And by the way, when we celebrate diversity, that's not carte blanche to celebrate every moronic lifestyle or choice. We don't celebrate meth addicts in the name of diversity. We don't celebrate smokers, or gamblers, or serial adulterers in the name of diversity either. Why celebrate obesity?”

“I totally agree with Kang. Being fat is not something to be proud of, period. We shouldn't make role models of people who are proud to be fat. This relentless focus on self-esteem has to stop somewhere. When did it become necessary to celebrate everything about everyone?”

Wildaboutcanadageese on Nov 27, 2013 at 19:22:03

“When did sticking your nose into everyone else's business become something to be proud of. What about live and let live? Don't people have enough to do in their own lives?”

WaspXIII on Nov 27, 2013 at 16:26:45

“When people put down others constantly for years and years. As much as you more than likely don't want to admit, some women and men are never going to be smaller than, say, a size 8. Face it, deal with it, and eventually embrace it. It's what the world is all about: diversity. Hooray for you if you're thin, but not everyone can get there, even with all the dedication and hard work.

(And this is coming from a woman with a very athletic body)”

“This is a bigger conversation than HuffPo is designed to handle. I'll close by saying I think you're right about certain industries where the scale of operations makes us uncompetitive. Dairy farming is a cottage industry. The economics of that industry mean there's no reason we can't be price competitive with European farms. If their farms are subsidized, I support countervailing tariffs to specifically negate those subsidies. But that's not the same as subsidizing our own farms.
For large-scale manufacturing, the economics are different and you're right, I don't have a solution to make Canada internationally competitive.”

“My reasons for supporting free trade don't change based on the industry. I don't think subsidies are a good idea for beef or pork any more than they're a good idea for cheese. It's 2013, we need to be competitive with the rest of the world and subsidies make it easy to be uncompetitive. You're also losing the bigger picture here - subsidies don't mean the protection of Canadian jobs. If prices are kept artificially high, Canadians are forced to pay higher prices which means less available income to spend on other Canadian goods. Get it?”

“Really? Look at the United States right now. A small group of gang members control all the resources. I'm not saying that communism's any better, but it's absurd to suggest that economic systems alone give rise to these problems. It's the willingness of those in control to abuse authority that causes the problems, and we've seen it in all economic systems.”

BCSLAVE on Oct 17, 2013 at 16:21:44

“Sadly, I fear that the majority of Canadians are precisely as stupid as they think.

Speaking of cynical conflation - note that Kenney says "free societies" as though capitalism equals freedom, communism equals fascism. That's cynical conflation if I've ever head it. Economic systems don't create freedom or oppression by themselves.

And have a browse though the comments here - almost every one is willing to say "no, it's CAPITALISM that creates oppression, stupid!"...there's your ideological blindness.”

“This monument is a bit misplaced. "Communism" didn't kill anyone. The murders Kenney describes were due to fascist aspects of those states.

That said, "capitalism" hasn't killed anyone either.

Economic systems don't kill people. Immoral, power-hungry monsters have killed people in their own states under all economic systems, it's the willingness to kill for gain that's to be remembered and lamented.

And it's utterly infantile for both May and Kenney to suggest otherwise.”

Nat Pop on Oct 17, 2013 at 16:31:08

“I agree, except May was making a joke and Kenny was making a throne speech. There's a big difference between one politician's stupid tweet, and government policy; the former is quickly forgotten, the latter has long lasting and wide consequences. For example, victims of the South American military huntas won't be remembered with this memorial because they didn't fall victims of "communism" (but instead of military dictatorships, serving their capitalist overlords and aided by the CIA/US).”

roylee on Oct 17, 2013 at 20:35:40

“Trading info can be handy as is equal trade.  Corporations pitting one state against another to lower standards I would be happy slapping some heavy penalties against.  Giving away technology to autocratic aggressive regimes to make some short term bucks is basically treasonous, as is whipsawing large segments of the workforce thereby undermining the human capital (and threatening long term security) in the process.   ”

“Well, of course the Dairy Farmers are upset. Anytime you encourage free trade, it's to the benefit of the market in general but the detriment of a small protected few. Canadians will get better prices on European cheese, which helps Canadian pocketbooks, but some dairy farmers in Quebec will see their sales drop if they don't make an effort to be price competitive.”
