Canada Spies On Israel's Enemies

Canada Spies On Israel's Enemies

Commented Aug 18, 2014 at 22:51:27 in Canada Politics

“As new and more efficient technologies emerge, it has become apparent that secrecy is gaining ground as the norm everywhere within governments, usually rationalized as serving 'national security' interests. Secrecy goes hand in hand with abuse of power. We are obviously on a very Orwellian slippery slope, now being eagerly greased in the Western world by neo-conservative governments (such as in Israel and Canada).”

“My take is that Mr. Zanoli tries to see the issues in purely ethical terms, with no a priori presumption of guilt or innocence of any parties, and thus, at least idealistically, judges the situation in an impartial ethical way. Of course, to be genuinely ethical and thus 'fair', he would have to judge all parties by the same standards. Hamas would have to be condemned accordingly. On the other hand, the 'neo-con'-style proponents of unconditional support for the state of Israel (under its current neo-con style government) seems to see the issues in a basically 'Manichean' light with its inherent one-sided presumptions and biases (including against a purely ethical perspective). They apparently cannot see the issues in a genuinely ethical or 'fair' manner. In their own minds, regardless of the facts, they are always on the side of 'good', thus necessitating no end of rationalizations for their 'justified' aggessions. Hamas is very similar of course. And thus we have the tragic recipe for never-ending violence.”

The Robocall Verdict Isn't the End of 2011 Election Fraud

“"How can he ensure that this will not repeat itself?” One could answer (only slightly facetiously): by leaving federal politics. Actually, Mr. Harper could not make such an assurance, for a number of reasons. One is that, like with Richard Nixon with the 'plumbers', Mr. Harper has cleverly created a system of plausible deniability in which the 'lower' operatives assume they have an implicit permission to do dirty tricks based, not on direct orders, but on a general 'top-down' attitude to the 'enemies' of the Party. This ultimately includes anyone who may not vote for the Party. Needless to say, this has negative ramifications for their attitude to democracy.”

“"My own government betrayed me." Emery could possibly argue that, in essence, he had become a convenient 'political prisoner' of the Harper Government (and their US counterparts). Progressives in Canada can only hope that the Harperites continue to preach their dishonest and often ludicrous positions to their 'base', apparently oblivious to how dishonest and ludicrous it all sounds to the rest of us.”

“"They don’t want to have an adult conversation about how you fix a serious social issue. They simply want to deal with smears and lies and innuendoes." This approach is typical of ideologues in general and now of Canada's neo-conservatives in particular. I, among others, have been warning of the rise of Neo-conservatism, and what that will mean for civilized and reasoned debate or discussion, whether in civil society or in politics. Through the Harperites, we have been witnessing this sad and potentially dangerous trend in action.”

They would believe they are the only "adults" in the room anyway so why bother if they don't want to be a part of the conversation then they need to be removed from the equation.”

“"Evil is evil." I agree with that bold statement. A huge problem however arises arises when one attempts to interpret or apply this idea in a truly 'moral' and non-biased way -- especially in a crisis where the 'false morality' of the Islamic extremists and the Israel-obsessed neo-conservatives has such an overwhelming place at the table. If deliberately killing or recklessly endangering the innocent for primarily political reasons is an 'evil', then I am witnessing much 'evil' from 'both sides'. But both sides want me to see only the evil of the other side. And if I do see evil on both sides, they insist that their evil is justified or 'good evil' as opposed to bad (unjustified) evil of the other side. Some neo-cons insist that because there can be 'no moral equivalence', that will magically allow them to behave as badly or even worse than the other side, as if they presume they are inherently innocent and existentially incapable of evil or guilt. Two wrongs do not make a right, and two evils do not make a good. Continual war is obviously not a path to good or peace, and because of the psychology of 'false morality' by the leaders on both sides, I must conclude that conflict or war will continue for a long while until new types of leaders on both sides emerge who understand that 'evil is evil' regardless of who does it, and that ending evil must begin within one's own self.”

“It is no coincidence, and no surprise, that climate change deniers tend to be science deniers. What is more troubling is that they all also tend to be responsibility deniers as well. That has many troubling ramifications for the human future, for being led by leaders who deny climate change and science will also reject responsibility to lead humanity in a responsible direction. Unless you expect to be raptured soon, that is not a comforting prospect.”

It seems that international Neo-conservative 'principles' now take precedence in our government, and it appears that Neo-conservative 'principles' have little respect for or little in common with the principles of international law as developed over the centuries in our liberal-democracies.”

“As the current CPC apparently is trained to believe, there is no point in even discussing the Israeli/Hamas conflict, much less honestly or intelligently analyzing it, for Israel (code for the the right-wing in Israel) is always innocent, regardless. And the farther to the right they become, the more 'innocent' they also magically become, and the more they are 'justified' in endless retaliation against the truly guilty ones -- i.e., their 'enemies'. Hamas has done much evil, no question, but there can be no possibility of a lasting peace in the region if both sides are led by leaders who perpetually reject any honest analysis of the situation, and reject any truly moral relation to their neighbours or to events.”

“"the Harper government has apparently given corporate lobbyists access to inside information." This apparently has become the norm, certainly for the Harper government, and apparently for most Western 'neo-liberal' influenced governments. We desperately need an open public debate on this potentially anti-democracy trend. Many Harper supporters vehemently maintain that there is no 'hidden agenda', but that is hard to logically support when a key foundation of your government is secrecy -- with the intent of handing over many of the government's policy keys to multi-national corporations.”

It was simply unfortunate for Mr. Ignatieff that he innocently (and perhaps naively) made their routine task of political demonization too easy.”

“"This is not the same Liberal party we knew. The party has changed." That can be said much more emphatically about the 'Conservative Party' under Stephen Harper. Politics has always attracted dishonest people, and every party has had their share; but the 'conservative' movement of the last few decades in both Canada and the US has a spectacularly bizarre relationship with honesty and truthfulness. When Mr. Trudeau writes that "I expect our Justice Minister to tell the truth" he is sadly reflecting an ethos from a previous era. I no longer routinely 'expect' truthfulness from my government, its ministers, or its spokespersons. The notion of 'truth' is now defined and employed only ideologically -- to serve the interests of the Party.”

With the assistance of Peter McKay, they were extremely fortunate to acquire the safe and reasonable sounding party label of 'Conservative'. But like their Tea Party cousins in the US, they are very unlike the majority of normal or reasonable 'conservatives' in North America prior to about the 1980s, when the 'Moral Majority' in effect hi-jacked the 'conservative' parties to install regressive values intended to take society "in the opposite direction" from the 'progressive' direction of the past two centuries. In this 21st century, I couldn't agree with anything more, for many profoundly important reasons not even related directly to economics. But a core ethical business culture is in direct contradiction to the reigning neoliberal ideology preached by the likes of Ayn Rand and Milton Friedman -- and practiced by many world leaders. We are in a 'culture war' -- a war between those who believe that an ethical business culture is crucial, and those who believe in a 'race to the bottom' business model.”
