“The comments here are really shocking. I at least thought that people would hide their bias against women. But I guess it's okay to just have it out there, in the open, that men still think that women are worth less as people. And lots of women believe the same.

It brings to mind how it used to be okay to say that Black people are worth less. Can't hire a person of colour, for a variety of reasons that people pretty much just made up. And you certainly can't pay them the same. That was a conversation that you used to be able to have in the open. Maybe in some sectors it still is.”

“Here in Canada, in the course you are required to take and pass (or challenge the written and practical test on) forbids you from ever, ever doing anything even remotely like that.

You always assume it is loaded, and always act as though it is, except in one particular circumstance when you have proven three different ways that it is unloaded.

In fact, pointing the muzzle of even an unloaded firearm, even in a non-violent situation, is a violation of the Criminal Code of Canada.”

“I'm sorry. He was a good man who got chewed up and spit out by a system that doesn't give a crap about the very people it's supposed to help.

I watched Earl Silverman argue his case in court, and I thought while watching him that he was a very brave person. The Alberta Human Rights Commission, which initially had accepted his complaint, then shut down the investigation, perhaps because of pressure from above. So Earl, all by himself, went to court and tried to get the courts to force the AHRC to re-open the case. But he was denied. As he was denied so many times.”

“It's not a matter of caring more about cows. If I could choose between ending male and female circumcision (I view them as equivalent) and ending dehorning, I would end circumcision.

Don't get upset because someone wrote a cow article. It's not a reflection on anyone's beliefs on circumcision.

Maybe someday we won't have either and the world will be a happier place.”

Some people like horned varieties. One guy I know has Texas Longhorns (don't ask me why, maybe leaner beef or better in hotter weather or easier calving). But he doesn't dehorn then. They've got horns (really BIG horns!), but they've got room, and they don't seem to have any problems most of the time.”

“I don't like dehorning. It seems to hurt the calves even more than branding and castrating. In fact, I'd like to end branding and knife castration, too.

I will point out, though, that lots of ranchers already select polled (hornless) cattle. But because the beef cattle we're familiar with (of European origins and not from India) have horn growth determined by a single gene with the horn growth allele being recessive, horned cattle can occasionally appear -- kind of like how red-headedness sometimes pops up unexpectedly in populations of people. So I think we need to decide how to humanely deal with horned cattle when they appear unexpectedly.

At this point I don't know why anyone wouldn't select for polled cattle. All the ranchers I know either have polled cattle or let their cattle keep their horns, seemingly with few problems, presumably because those cattle have lots of room.”

SusanElizabeth1949 on Apr 4, 2013 at 11:55:46

“It is dairy cattle that are routinely dehorned, that keeps the cows from goring each other and the dairy workers as well.”

If that's not what you're trying for, please read back to where Nerdswagger said "because they think it's normal to do what's perpetuated in porn movies on a regular basis." That is where the action came in.

And since someone with the professional experience and position in which he/she can see that there has been an increase in anal incontinence amount young people, I don't understand why you or people like you aren't willing to allow there to be a conversation around why young people are being injured in such a way. Why do you not want this talked about?”

“"I don't understand why you or people like you aren't willing to allow there to be a conversation around why young people are being injured in such a way."

You're overstimating my power to disallow anything.

A conversation is two or more people talking. They need not agree on everything. Nerdswagger and I are having a conversation.

"Why do you not want this talked about?"

I want this talked about.

"Howler, are you being deliberately obtuse?"

A little snarky at times maybe but I am trying to get a point across.

"I don't think it's really moving the conversation forward.'

You can move forward in the wrong direction. I want to back up a bit and pause and make sure we're heading in the right direction.”

“"Nerdswagger said "because they think it's normal to do what's perpetuated in porn movies on a regular basis." That is where the action came in."

You can watch a video and think whatever you want to think and you haven't injured anybody.

The act, performed in an unsafe manner without precautions, is causing the injury. If you are going to educate people, it should be about the danger of injury of the act and how to minimize the risks by using proper precautions.

"And since someone with the professional experience and position in which he/she can see that there has been an increase in anal incontinence amount young people"

This is not an issue in contention. I am not arguing about this. We're actually arguing about a legal concept called "proximate cause".

To be continued...”

“There are plenty of skilled people out of work, this is true. Not all of them just took "easy" degrees, as you have pointed out. A lot of the "newbies," though, have unrealistic expectations. Yes, you can earn a six-figure income, but may be after 10 years in the industry. You also have to be willing to put in a heck of a lot more than a 35-40 hour workweek. You may be required to travel, or relocate, to get what you want. There are plenty of people who, when they say they "can't" get a job in their chosen field, are not willing to do whatever it takes to get it.”

“So you're saying you know what is and is not a police matter moreso than Staff Sgt. Jim Stinson?”

stciappelletto on Nov 7, 2013 at 22:53:51

“No I'm saying that he was being disingenuous and probably knew he was wrong. Police decline to get involved in things for their own reasons all the time. The classic example is breach of court orders, which is an offense under the Criminal Code. That's especially an issue in family law cases. Unless ordered to intervene by the court they'll probably just say it's a civil matter and refuse to do anything.

Frequently "it's a civil matter" is police code language for "we're refusing to enforce the law because we can't be bothered".”

stciappelletto on Sep 24, 2013 at 01:53:46

“Oh they know, they're just being disingenuous.  If they don't like doing their job maybe they should ask for the Criminal Code to be rewritten. Because it's the law.
From the Criminal Code:
430. (1) Every one commits mischief who wilfully(a) destroys or damages property;...Punishment(3) Every one who commits mischief in relation to property that is a testamentary instrument or the value of which exceeds five thousand dollars(a) is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding ten years; or(b) is guilty of an offence punishable on summary conviction.Police decide to not pursue criminal matters because they are "civil matters" all the time.
The classic one is breach of court orders, especially in family matters.  Technically, no "police assist" clause is needed, because a willful violation of a court order is an offence under the Criminal Code.    If a cop sees it it's grounds for immediate arrest without warrant.
If there isn't a police assist clause they can't be bothered.   The origin of police assist clauses is because so often they can't be bothered to enforce the law.   See this from the Criminal Code of Canada:127. (1) Every one who, without lawful excuse, disobeys a lawful order made by a court of justice or by a person or body of persons authorized by any Act to make or give the order, other than an order for the payment of money, is, unless a punishment or other mode of proceeding”
