“Judge Jim Gray
on The Six Groups Who Benefit From Drug Prohibition

In 1992, Jim Gray, a conservative judge in conservative Orange County, California, held a press conference during which he recommended we rethink our drug laws. Back then, it took a great deal of courage to suggest the war on drugs was a failed policy.

http://youtu.be/b6t1EM4Onao

Today, more and more Americans are coming to the realization that prohibition's costs—whether measured in lives and liberties lost or dollars wasted—far exceed any possible or claimed benefits.

A law enforcement group claims passage of Prop 19, the marijuana legalization initiative on California's November ballot, would decriminalize an estimated 60,000 drug arrests made in the Golden State each year.

So, who is the face of the nonprofit Law Enforcement Against Prohibition? None other than former prosecutor and Orange County Superior Court Judge Jim Gray.

"I was a drug warrior until I saw what was happening in my own courtroom,'' Gray said at a news conference announcing his group's endorsement of Prop 19 (via the Los Angeles Times' Catherine Saillant.)”

So I guess we should try to become poor (i.e. lower our wages). Why? So we can improve our long-term economic growth, i.e. so we can become richer…. wait a minute, something seems to have gone wrong with this argument.

But the danger for Rabbi Scheier and his fellow travellers is to think that all Canadian Jews — even a strong majority — see the government of Israel and its policies with the same unquestioning reverence as the prime minister. More likely, the community is divided.

It is hard to know because the debate is subdued, if not suffocated, in Canada. Increasingly, Jews who challenge the orthodoxy of Benjamin Netanyahu’s Israel — though they may be no less observant and Zionist — are called “anti-Semites” and “self-hating Jews” by their co-religionists.

“Celebrity Chef Anthony Bourdain then made his way into the West Bank. And on his way to visit a settlement, he said something most Americans nor Canadians nor Britians never hear on TV… on CNN to be exact:

In 2003, Israel began construction on a wall. The wall now stretches 450 miles. When completed, it will span 700 miles, 85% of it in Palestinian territory… Since 1967, 500,000 Israeli “settlers” have illegally moved into the West Bank, all in contravention of international law, many in contravention of Israeli law.

Chef noted: "It’s right there for all to see. And it feels like something out of a science fiction film. This is the wall. From the other side, from inside this place, it doesn’t feel like anything other than what it is. A prison."

“Why I changed my mind on weed
(it’s actually not harmful for adults)
By Dr. Sanjay Gupta
CNN Chief Medical Correspondent

I mistakenly believed the Drug Enforcement Agency listed marijuana as a schedule 1 substance because of sound scientific proof. Surely, they must have quality reasoning as to why marijuana is in the category of the most dangerous drugs that have "no accepted medicinal use and a high potential for abuse."

They didn't have the science to support that claim, and I now know that when it comes to marijuana neither of those things are true.

---> It doesn't have a high potential for abuse, and there are very legitimate medical applications. In fact, sometimes marijuana is the only thing that works.

“How I lost my fear of Universal Health Care: When I moved to Canada in 2008, I was a die-hard conservative Republican. So when I found out that we were going to be covered by Canada’s Universal Health Care, I was somewhat disgusted. I believed based on my politics that government mandated health care was a violation of my freedom.

Fast forward a little past the Canadian births of my third and fourth babies. I had better prenatal care than I had ever had in the States. I started to feel differently about Universal government mandated and regulated Health care. When health care is universal, doctors are free to recommend and provide the best care for every patient instead of basing their care on what each patient can afford.

I realized how many times my family had avoided hospital care in the USA because of our lack of coverage.

“To put this in perspective: Torontonians spend the equivalent of about two cancelled gas plants on their police service every year.

The scope of policing has expanded by orders of magnitude in recent decades, in large part because governments and the public have either explicitly or inadvertently securitarized an ever-expanding array of activities, many of which are really social or medical ills. Order is integral to freedom. But in a liberal democracy that is premised on limited state intervention, we should be debating “what kind” of policing instead of “how much.”

http://www.thestar.com/opinion/commentary/2014/04/06/police_are_pricing_themselves_out_of_business.html

Solex on Jul 1, 2014 at 00:47:19

“At the risk of repeating myself, and as I've done elsewhere, we need to start making the police in North America better than they are now, and this is how we should be doing it:

'Education is highly stressed in police recruitment and promotion. Entrance to the force is determined by examinations administered by each prefecture. Examinees are divided into two groups: upper-secondary-school graduates and university graduates. Recruits underwent rigorous training—one year for upper-secondary school graduates and six months for university graduates—at the residential police academy. Promotion is achieved by examination and requires further course work. In-service training provides mandatory continuing education in more than 100 fields. Police officers with upper-secondary school diplomas are eligible to take the examination for sergeant after three years of on-the-job experience. University graduates can take the examination after only one year. University graduates are also eligible to take the examination for assistant police inspector, police inspector, and superintendent after shorter periods than upper-secondary school graduates. There are usually five to fifteen examinees for each opening.'

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Law_enforcement_in_Japan#Conditions_of_service

Until we get a similar set-up going with regards to training and conduct, we'll always be at the mercy of over-zealous cops, and paying more for policing than we should be.”

“We privatize profit and socialize cost

NEOCONS spends all their time dismantling public services at all levels ...and they want to privatize everything. Why? Because you can't very well collect under-the-tables bribes from public sector employees now can you?

This is nothing more than downloading directly to the taxpayers.

Private companies are 'for profit' companies, so any services we currently rely on will cost considerably more. These companies usually have no benefits nor pensions to enhance profits. Further folks, what about maintaining the privacy of your personal information? Just think about information you've put on forms for income tax returns, EI applications, CPP and OAS. I can go on and on. For the most part, the public service has done a relatively good job serving the public with diminished resources/personnel and keeping your information confidential. In private hands, I'm not so sure.... especially if these are contract or lower paid workers. Some of your personal information is worth a lot in the wrong hands. Is this what Canadians want?
