Istanbul Protests Leave 2 Dead, Erdogan 'Amazed' By Police Restraint

Commented May 23, 2014 at 21:26:43 in World

“Police fighting a dozen youths and two of the youths killed and Erdogan is "amazed" at the police restraint? This response is typical of Erdogan's public pronouncements, such as when he responded to the mine disaster by saying that these accidents are "part of the mining business". Erdogan is a politician who has lost touch with the Turkish people. Perhaps he plans to link up with Putin's dream of a Eurasian empire, emulating Putin himself.”

“She certainly has beautiful legs. She might as well show them off now before time takes its usual toll. She is young and full of energy. Her acts are above all a celebration of youth and sexually, appropriate for someone as young as she is. They are also a spoof of society's attitudes toward sex today, so they are not devoid of an intellectual element.”

Sterling will never be accused of being an inspiration to anyone, a timely warning perhaps, but not an inspiration.”

“Michelle Leonhart of the DEA is more concerned about maintaining her own job than supporting Obama's efforts to reform the nation's approach to drugs and drug usage, especially marijuana. She, and her deputy Harrigan, should be fired by Obama. The drug agencies of the United States have become self-perpetuating fiefdoms, unresponsive to the desires of the American people, and not reflective of the current scientific, social, and political, and even economic, consensus that the war on drugs has failed miserably, and was bound to fail from its inception. There are over 2 million people in prisons in the United States, a large percentage of which have ended up there under the current war on drugs. Two million people is about the size of the population of central Chicago. This is a huge wasted expense for America. At a much lower cost, the emphasis should be on treatments for the disease that addiction really is. If you treat addiction successfully, the problem of drugs themselves disappears entirely.”

“America is on a collision course with its own future, as the middle class dwindles away. Wages the life-blood of the middle class have stagnated, even dropped in "real" terms. while the value of stocks and bonds, the basis for the wealth of the rich, have skyrocketed. If these trends continue, and there is presently no indication that they won't, the future of America seems bleak.

The one positive indication of change in the air, is that Americans seem finally to be aware that something is very wrong, from the 1% - 99% discussions, to the presence of Thomas Piketty's new book (Capital in the 21st Century) on the best seller list, Americans are being driven to question how we as a nation have arrived at this national state of imbalance, and searching for ways out of our current predicament.

It is often said that members of the American middle class share in the wealth of the stock and bond markets via their pension plans, in particular 401k plans, but recent articles have underlined just how marginal this participation has been, as the high fees of these plans have syphoned off much of the accumulation of wealth in these plans in order to feed the barracudas of Wall Street.”

“In fact, the third World War has already begun in the form of Cyber-War. Cyber-war will precede any military war in the future, and may very well replace it. Hackers "working" in isolation are threatening enough, and become labeled as criminals, which they very often are, but when they are backed by national governments, even employed by national governments, they become "virtual" national heroes, perhaps not celebrated individually, and conspicuously, but as a group, and in any event, well rewarded for their efforts. Hackers have become the "elite" soldiers of the future.”

“This is a perfect example of how the NSA's spying has backfired. By our spying on Angela Merkel's own cell phone, we have undermined any pressure she might have exerted on the German industrialists to back stiffer sanctions.”

“That might be the worst conclusion based on a non-understanding of the facts yet. The NSA and spying? That's your conclusion? Talk about curious! I'm curious how you manage to find HP to make your post? No doubt you've never been to Germany, you have no understanding of the Germany economy much less the dependence the German citizen has in his day to day life for Petroleum and Nat Gas from Russia much less the need for a strong German economy in the EU. Move to Minnesota before next winter and turn off your heat and electricity.... and then blame the Minnesota industrialists because you're in the dark, cold and have no job. Then you can add the NSA for spying on your cell phone too.”

“In my mind the death of one innocent person let along 1 out of every 25 convicted persons who have been sentenced to death is worth it. At least life in prison offers the hope to the innocent that they will be exonerated, and does not deprive them of life. It is a terrible injustice to sentence an innocent person to death, and undermines any justification for the death penalty.”

“Karl Marx, the economist maintained also that Capital would be ever more concentrated in the hands of a few while workers would receive less and less pay until eventually a crisis in demand would occur as products would be churned out in ever larger quantities due to the capital investments of the rich, until there were too many products chasing too few customers. This is starting to happen now. In the past unions provided some counter force keeping workers salaries higher, with the decline in union membership, this is no longer the case. America is on a collision course with its own future.”

They know full well that no one in Washington dares to shake the table upon which their elaborate house of cards has been so carefully, and delicately, constructed, because should this construction collapse, the country will be carried right back to the edge of the abyss it just so recently escaped. Never-the-less, America is on a collision course with its own future, and the rigged monopoly game that is Wall Street will need to be reformed before it crashes to the ground bringing the American economy along with it.”

“I am in no position to "drag others down with me", nor would I want to. If mortgage interest rates do soar, because of inflation, and Americans are not obtaining salaries to match the general rise in interest rates, houses will become out of reach and sales will drop. The people who need to be especially cautious, should this happen, are the people who have "speculated" buying multiple properties with adjustable mortgages.. Americans salaries have not kept pace with inflation as it is, it remains to be seen if they will during a bout of inflation (should it occur).. People who have bought houses on fixed mortgages, do not generally have any problems at all when interest rates rise, adjustable mortgages are another story altogether.”

Sarah Palin: 'Waterboarding Is How We'd Baptize Terrorists' If I Were In Charge

Commented Apr 28, 2014 at 05:09:30 in Politics

“Hundreds of thousands of women were killed in the middle ages by the equivalent of "water-boarding" , accused of being witches, because they became widowed, old, sick, mentally ill, or because their husbands considered it speedier than seeking a divorce. If women were exceptionally skilled in the art of healing, teaching, or competed for occupations generally held by men, they were often accused of witch craft, no proof needed of any crime at all. The only "proof" generally obtained was experimental, i.e. if they survived the water boarding this was obvious proof that they were witches after all, and they were tortured and murdered as a result. Sarah Palin's attitude toward water-boarding is equivalent to that held in the middle ages, and more recently, by the citizens in colonial Salem, Massachusetts, in 1692. Water boarding is torture for torture's sake, it never results in "truth" . It only results in interrogators hearing want they want to hear.”

“I think that those who would underestimate the intelligence of the American people, who in recent years have endured a crash course in economics, are overdue for a surprise. Many people everywhere, but especially in America, have been waiting for a book that will help put their own personal ordeals in perspective, historically, and this book Capital in the Twenty-First Century is exactly that. Conservatives have good reason to be uneasy, as they thrive on ignorance, if not their own, then the ignorance that they seek to exploit among their followers. They get nervous if they see this ready pool of ignorance begin to dry up. Everyone I speak to, political or not, has been stung badly by the economic crisis of the last decade, and they are seeking answers. I fully expect this very engaging and well written work to continue for a long time on the best seller list, and in fact, believe it will become one of the classic books of all time in economics.”

Commented Apr 28, 2014 at 03:35:33 in Business

“Thomas Piketty new book has already become a classic, and he will be ranked with the likes of Adam Smith, David Ricardo, John Maynard Keynes, Paul Samuelson, and, yes, even Karl Marx. There are changes ahead. Thomas Piketty lays out the direction that the world's economic systems are moving toward, an ever enlarging gap between the inherited wealth of the rich, and the shrinking income of the poor. What his thesis cannot reveal or predict is the reaction to this growing gap. Some of the world's super-rich are heeding the warning signs of mass discontent, and at least adjusting the tone of their discourse, it remains to be seen if this results in substantive changes which would forestall the inevitable reaction. As wealth becomes concentrated in fewer and fewer hands, the vulnerability at the top, without a buffer afforded by a viable middle class becomes more evident by the day.”
