Generation Y Favours NDP Over All Other Political Parties, Says HuffPost Poll Of Canadian Millennials

Commented Nov 30, 2012 at 07:47:00 in Canada Politics

“I've experienced, as an election volunteer, activist and door knocker, what Coletto is talking about and frankly, I'm appauled at the lack of engagement that my generation has in politics. The complaining and naysaying about politicians and politics, all the while not bothering to go down to a polling station and vote. It's the simplest thing to do, casting a ballot, and if we all did it the configuration of the House of Commons would look vastly different and be far more representative. As it is, my generation has chosen to be disengaged and allow our parents and grandparents to cast the deciding votes on our lives. We need to wake up to the realities that the current government knows it's not in their interest for us to vote, so they aren't going to incentivize us to vote for them. We need to vote with our feet and get to ballot boxes when the occasion calls for it, not sit on our hands and complain that nobody represents us.”

“Although I agree with you Ryan, I don't want uninformed voters going to the booth. The talking points are designed to grab votes and never intentioned to be genuine in some instances. We need to encourage everyone to pay attention to what is going on, talk to family members and friends and go to debates and find out what the candidates are all about.”

“I commend the Huffington Post Canada for commenting on the "editorial" styles of these two "newsmen". It's quite clear that while they, and the entire Sun News chain claim to be a source for "Hard News and Straight Talk" what they really mean is attacking any and all things Liberal and using any means to try and smear political leaders that don't conform to their beliefs. I don't understand why these two farts are so upset by sex. Sex is sex and much like Fox News in the the US, when sex get's involved they fly off the rails and claim impropriety. Sex is a part of life and Levant and Coren would serve their own points better by leaving the smut and porn references out of their "analysis"”

“Liberals in BC and Quebec are going the way of the Federal Liberals (knowing full well that neither of these parties are "farm teams" of the Federal one except for loose connections). Jean Charest is being eaten away at the margins and should a provincial NDP be launched soon after the current election left leaning federalists in Quebec will finally have a party to go to, bleeding federalists from Charest party.

Clarks party in BC has been dead in the water since the HST came in. It really didn't matter who was brought in as premier; it could have been Falcon or Abbott, the part was doomed.”

Carbon Tax: Canada Should Adopt Measure Nationwide, IEA Says

Carbon Tax: Canada Should Adopt Measure Nationwide, IEA Says

Commented Aug 17, 2012 at 01:38:40 in Canada Business

“I'm of two minds on a Carbon Tax. One one end it's important for government to act and as of late it looks like governments in North America are unwilling to go the distance and invest in green technology. A Carbon Tax is both a good incentive to drive less and is also a good way to raise revenue to invest in green tech. On the other end I see Carbon Taxes as yet another tax on the poor and in a province like BC where people are already fee'd to death, more taxes on the low income level that cannot be avoided (everyone drives) makes it that much more difficult.

The one workaround is to insure tax credits are issued to low income individuals based on their annual income. If can be done and the amount credited is proportional to what is spend in increased taxes, then I can perhaps see how a Carbon Tax is a good thing. I don't want to ignored the Middle Class either who are equally fee'd and even more over taxed. Perhaps if the Carbon Tax were abandoned but taxes on wealth and capital gains were increased then revenue gained could also contribute to a Green Tech fund.

As it is, I'm still on the fence about the effectiveness of a Carbon Tax.”

“I couldn't agree with you more Kenneth. The fact that our media is so concentrated and increasingly vertical integration is an ever present reality; it's very scary for the average consumer. Not to mention getting news these days from watching TV is a farce unto itself. No matter what you watch it's either the CBC (too scared to be critical), Global and CTV (privately owned and rarely critical of government if ever) and then Sun News (a farce in it's own right, probably a joke to begin with and we all just haven't gotten the punchline).”

“Vancouver Island has a brand new... what is it, [3 million or 1.5 million?] dollar hospital being built in Courtenay/Comox, with about 120 new beds... not much more I can remember off-hand, but I consider ourselves lucky over here with how many great facilities we have nearby. Victoria, Vancouver, Naniamo, and soon to be Comox. I'm not sure where any well-established hospitals are around the interior of B.C, but payment for transportation to these facilities from remote locations by the government certainly helps things along, especially with ferry costs.”

NDP Attack Ads: Stephen Harper Targeted In New TV Spots (VIDEO)

Commented Jul 11, 2012 at 00:00:11 in Canada Politics

“The unfortunate reality is that the NDP needs to hit hard against the Conservatives. There isn't just one type of negative ad either. This ad, for all it's negativity, does hit at policy and not at personality. Will that be effective enough to convince Canadians that Harper has mismanaged the economy, which is inevitably what this ad is trying to do? I'm not so sure. Canadians who have voted for Harper in the past knew what kind of economic stand he would take and have continued to vote for him. Remember, the deficit didn't just happen, but was indeed a factor before the last election and the electorate gave Harper a majority. Is it too much to ask the electorate to look to past actions and judge based on those? Perhaps, though the Conservative line will be, predictibly, that they were given a majority which showed that Canadians approved of the Harper direction.

The thing to do here, in my mind, is not to attack the deficit but to go after the reckless decisions that made the deficit higher (cutting taxes that have done nothing to create jobs, cutting GST) and the spending that is being looked to in the future (prisons, mandatory minimums, uncompetative contracts, mass publc sector layoffs). Only when the options are put before the public and they can see the policy is wrong, can the NDP then gain traction.

In any event I'm happy with this ad.”

“To me the question is simple: fully publicly funded healthcare is the only egalitarian way to distribute health to everyone regardless of age, race, sex or income. We cannot allow private hospitals to become the mandate of any government. We allow that to happen and watch as our per capita spending on healthcare increases to the point where we, like the US, will be paying more then double what everone else with a universal system pays.”

We have this uncredentialized blogger and Kathryn Marshall parading themselves as fair and equal commentators when the reality seems to be so much further away. Given the recent strikes at Air Canada, Canada Post (which still doesn't have a contract after almost a year) and now CP Rail, do Canadians come down on the side of government imposed contracts or mediated settlements (it's worth noting that since the CPC has been so heavy handed in their back-to-work impositions, employers have been less willing to negotiate).”

That would certainly not be a stretch if I were back in South Korea (or cat in south of where I am in China) but that being said, the fact that the seal hunt has gone on for thousands of years without cameras and crews to bring it front and center doesn't make it less important for people who live and need this hunt to sustain themselves.
I want to point out the hypocrisy in calling out the seal hunt as awful but at the same time continuing to eat factory farmed meat. So many do it. I love meat and will continue to eat it freely and happily. I also know the needs of the Inut people. Why don't their priorities come first?”

Yes, but of course PETA never cared much for the people affected by their campaigns. I'm sorry, but I will now and always put people's needs before animals. It doesn't mean I don't have a heart (I am a dog person after all) but when it comes to seals and the industry of sealing, it needs to be protected and I'm glad the government is standing up for it's maintenance.”
