“Perhaps you could explain how the date of the change in the law is at all relevant to, well, anything, and how it doesn't mean that it was due to the abuse they suffered as children, and how it was not intended to help other children in situations like that?”

“Really? That's your opinion?

This woman abused her children so badly that the case spawned legislation in that state to help other children escape from homes like that. She had 6 out of 8 children removed from her home, in an era where things like that were notoriously swept under the carpet, and children were very rarely considered to be people in need of protection.

"To be that mean..."

Give your head a shake. A hard one.”

Red Russet on Sep 13, 2013 at 22:19:52

“In fact there was no such legislation "spawned" by their case, which occurred in the 1960's. They started it themselves years later which sadly had no effort on children tortured by their parents in the 1950's.

Maybe instead of telling people off, you should put your energy into more reading.

"After they got out of the orphanage Johnson-Reddick's sons and daughters contacted then state Senator Sue Wagner and lobbied for a change in the law, which went through in 1987."

“There is nothing in there about sexual abuse, yet hundreds of commenters are going off on a sex abuse rant? To be that mean you have to be mentally disturbed, to write about anyone like that and print it in the newspaper you have to be equally mentally disturbed. Looks like the apples didn't fall far from the tree.”

“What a shocker that these business owners are ill-informed about the law. Americans are completely ill-informed in general about most everything that happens in their country. If it can't be said in a 30 second sound bite, they don't want to hear it.

These business owners are immoral, disgusting excuses for human beings. To not bother to get educated about a mandatory law, but rather threaten to lay off people, in an already troubled economy? I hope this hits them in the pocketbook hard.”

“You people are so focused on thinking Harper is the anti-Christ, you can't even see reality anymore. His party is further to the left than the Dems are in the US. We don't have to fight the gay marriage question, or the right to choose question, or the equal pay issues, every single time we vote. It's a dead horse and he is content to leave it as such. Add to that the successful captaining through the worldwide economic downturn, the tougher penalties and punishment for criminals and the removal of our boys from Afghanistan, and we are safer and more secure - economically and personally - than we have been in a long time.”

“Sordo, the reason seniors vote Conservative is that they've worked hard for their money and would like to keep it. Under the other parties they won't get to.”

“Actually he got 40%, and nowithstanding bitterness from Liberals (19% btw), will most likely retain and even build on those numbers next time. Fact is, Harper doesn't do enough wrong in regards to social issues, but does enough right in regards to economic concerns, to keep his party going for a while. Trudeau isn't going to save the Liberals - he's too young and inexperienced to garner trust - and the NDP are tilting too far to the left for everyone else's tastes.”

“Everything is Harper's fault. Global climate change, the war in Syria, provincial building permits, untied shoelaces, that giant pimple on your neck...

I get that it's not the Huff Post allowed party line, but if you did a bit of research into what all Harper has actually done for the natives in his time, you may just find that it's about 10x as much as any previous government. Including many initiatives designed to give them greater autonomy and personal pride. Quite unlike the "let's keep them victims and let them play in our do-gooder games" mindset of the other parties.”

“That's not likely to be a risk, is it? I think benefit and credits would be better served going to those families to whom multiple credits and benefits are not already being given, ie: two parent homes where one parent would like the luxury of staying home with their children for their formative years, but who cannot afford to do so, not people who collect a cheque for 18 years because they have no interest in working.

We have enough welfare in our system. Let's put our taxes toward people who make a contribution to the country, k?”

Doctor Nick on Nov 27, 2013 at 12:22:55

“There's a lot of moralizing in your statement and not much analysis of actual incentives. Diane's whole point is that staying at home and raising children IS making a contribution to the country - in fact, such a great contribution that we ought to subsidize it as taxpayers. If that is the case then it follows that welfare targeted at poor single mothers - who otherwise would be forced into the labor force, even with really young children, leading to who knows what childcare arrangements - is the best possible policy. These are no doubt the children who benefit the most from having their parent stay at home (unless your view is that only the wives of wealthy gentlemen are "good" as stay at home moms, but that's a different argument).

If the income splitting policy was geared towards the poorest two-income families it would make more sense, but the current proposal actually provides a big benefit to the wealthy families who have so much single income they ALREADY have one spouse at home (because as you say, it is a luxury). While the current proposal does have an cap on the amount of income that could be split (thankfully - 50,000 I think) there are certainly other policies that would better incentivize staying at home for mothers on the margin. The fact that single parents are ignored is a serious omission, and the current proposal works for dependent up to 18 - I would limit to a lower age.”

“Last time they gave incentives to parents not in the workforce, it really only benefitted those who never have been. And the pizza places they order from.

Your idea would be fantastic if it were actually directed to those two parent homes, wherein one parent chooses to stay home to raise children. These types of policies rarely benefit the "correct" beneficiaries.”

Doctor Nick on Nov 26, 2013 at 14:31:49

“Yes, my proposal is basically welfare (or a child tax credit). My point is that welfare - not income splitting - is the policy that best enables mothers who might be constrained by the need for income to stay at home with their children. Which I thought was Diane's original objective.

What do you think would happen to children of poor single parents who couldn't get welfare?”

Quebec has also been given a free ride long enough by the rest of the country. There is nothing more pathetic than entitled youth whining about getting something for nothing.”
