“Lest we be too smug, gay bashing still happens in Canada. Yes, we have big gay pride parades, and we certainly don't have the same level of state sanctioned homophobia that exists in Montenegro. But just ask the nurses at hospitals how many gay or mistaken for gay people they patch up on any given day. We have a ways to go.
And the gains we have made against sexism could be taken away from us as our governments move more to the right. Rights should be inherent and not subject to the vagaries of various governments.”

“The scandals and corruption are only symptoms of a government determined to destroy the environment in order to increase the bottom line for the fossil fuel industry, and to destroy universal health care in order to support the private insurance racket. So, the real issue is that we have a government that is working against the interests of the vast majority of Canadian people. The corruption is a minor issue compared to this.”

“"determined to destroy the environment"
No. They are not determined to destroy the environment - they don't care about the environment.”

“The greater issue in the senate scandal is the coverup attempt. When a government displays such blatent disrespect for the population as to tell manifest lies to avoid the consequences of its actions, no trust is possible in any of their decisions. Consequently I, as well as the vast majority of citizens who think and are concerned about the long term prosperity of this country, share your views on the Harper government.”

“I'm in my 70's so many of my friends are seniors. We all support legalization or decriminalization of pot. We are all (save one) politically progressive, think Harper is the worst thing that has ever happened to this country, and are actively demonstrating, educating, and petitioning. So much for all the senior stereotyping.”
Steel Wind on Aug 16, 2013 at 11:56:13
“Your social peers are in the minority. That doesn't mean they are RARE. They certainly are NOT "rare" and amount to one-third of that demographic.
But it's the OTHER two-thirds of seniors who most stand in the way and in that regard, the stereotype is a fair one.”

“Well said, Sandra.
Demosthenez on Aug 16, 2013 at 11:39:51
“Well Sandra, I'm sure a lot of seniors aren't forgetting how Harpo the Clown robbed them by taxing income trusts (when he swore up and down he wouldn't).”

“Excuse me! Transport Canada's budget has been slashed. You need regulators to enforce regulations. The money is no longer there for regulators to do their job. So you don't have to deregulate, just ensure that regulations can't be enforced.
The Harper government cut regulations to this very railway in 2011.”

“I don't know where to begin with your comments. The problems we face are global. Keep yourself ignorant and your head in the sand. These two attributes will ensure that Canada will lose everything worthwhile about this country.”

“You probably don't understand what is happening in North America. Because of the long delays in pipeline approval companies have dramatically expanded their ship by rail crude loading and unloading facilities. The new ones under construction are massive. So by dragging their feet the Canadian and American governments have let a transition from pipeline to rail for crude transport take over. Once the infrastructure is in it will be even harder to switch. How's that for head in the sand?”

“3.1 million was cut from Transport Canada's budget. I have a relative that works there, and he said they don't have money to do their job properly. And in 2011, the Harper regime gave that very railroad permission to operate with only one engineer. And there's no conn.ection. There is no so blind as those who will not see. I do not believe that partisan politics are good for the country, and do not support any particular party, but if we Canadians don't smarten up, we are slated to lose everything that is good about this country. .”

“Tell that to the Swedes, the Danes, the Finns. I guess you think Socialism caused the 2008 world wide economic crisis. If that is the case, there is no point discussing anything with you.”
Brent Nicholson on Aug 13, 2013 at 13:10:24
“No, what caused the 2008 crisis was greed, lack of morals, zero ethics and a lot of people who should be in jail. Socialism is a system that relies on the few to produce to support the many. Socialism is a system that allows government, the non producers, power over those that do produce. The problem with socialism is that it can never stay confined to a nice comfortable little box where those in need get the support they need. Once a foothold is gained into the bank accounts of the earners they naturally assume they can take it all. Sweden, Finland and Denmark all find themselves in that position today. All living things must grow or die and government is a living thing. ”

“And what specific insanity would that be? She's knowledgeable, intelligent, and has not stated anything in her journalism that can be disproved. Guess that's a big threat to the no-nothing ideologues running the country now.”

“Take Canada back from whom? Socialism has proven time and again to be the antithesis of prosperity and yet they keep believing. Left wing agendas throughout the world have left it on the brink of economic suicide. If Canada capitulates it will be the end.”
“An earlier article in HP has a woman claiming that women aren't successful because we lack ambition. Perhaps we are insufficiently stupid. I'm sure society sees being in Congress being successful. No thanks. I couldn't cope listening to those ignorant no nothings blather on.”

“And Abraham Lincoln owned slaves.
You cannot have democracy when you muzzle the press.
You cannot have democracy when you attack unions and shrink the middle class.
You cannot have democracy when you accumulate the wealth in the hands of the few.
You cannot have democracy when the strong are sociopaths.
You cannot have democracy when the government does not protect the environment from greed.
You cannot have democracy if the general public is brainwashed.
You cannot have democracy if the wage payer exploits your labour for his own greed.
You cannot further the brotherhood of man by helping the rich not pay their fair share of taxes.
You cannot have a democracy when the government lacks transparency.
And speaking of initiative and independence - as a woman my initiative and independence has been rewarded by my work being unpaid, underpaid, ignored, or undervalued.
What good old Abe said is irrelevant in a society where the playing field has been set up to accumulate unearned wealth for the rich and exploiting everyone else.”

“It's a long time before the next election. The fix is already in, and the press is not asking any hard questions of Harper and his minions. Anything can happen in the next election, and my guess is as good as any pundit's. And I ain't guessing.”

“Many of these posts reflect a lack of knowledge by many US citizens of history, economics, and religion. What is the problem? Is it your educational system? Democracy can only exist if the citizens are well informed. The US is a long way from being a democracy.”
