“Hardcore Manitoban? Different than Bob and Doug MacKenzie of The Great White North who picked up a version of the Ottawa Valley brogue for their characters. Having lived in the Ottawa Valley, I can say Rick Moranis nailed the accent. The vocabulary is a different story.”
"We said we had evidence of Al Gore going against Nelson Mandela on AIDS drugs in Africa, and we planned to release it," [Paul] Davis said. "People said, 'This is huge! You have to go to New Hampshire in the morning!' So we found a vehicle and a few friends willing to go to New Hampshire, including a friend named Rachel Maddow."”
““‘DONATE.’ Like any good church getting money is their goal.”
This is the harsh reality of living in a society where everything costs something. Much of what churches do costs its members money. From helping families in need to campaigns against war, social activities to children's programs, all these things require people's time, heat, light and water in a building. And, those people who supply their time need to eat, too.
As these congregations of Atheists find out who they are instead of who they are not, they will bump up against the same things as congregations in churches, temples, mosques and synagogues. There will be internal strivings as purists distance themselves from the main groups.
As a progressive Baptist, I hope these new groups of Atheists, Humanists and Freethinkers will dovetail their efforts with religious folks who are already doing social justice work. When groups find a common cause, regardless of their religion, they can do much together to relieve poverty, care for the environment, speak out against war and put the feet of lawmakers to the fire on social injustice. I have seen these things happen and they are beautiful.”
