“Do I really have the freedom to make my opinions known ? What about the hundreds of peaceful G20 protesters in Toronto, kettled for hours, arrested and for the most part never charged. We may not be as extreme as the old East Germany but we are definitely becoming much more authoritarian.”

Angelo Barovier on Oct 3, 2013 at 18:14:13

“A large number of the people that were kettled were not protestors at all. Some were even members of the press. It was a police level action that had nothing to do with silencing protestors -- who were blissfully allowed to air their views in the days prior before any of the mayhem ensued.

'opinionated amateur' is absolutely right. For all the criticisms I have of the Harper Government, we categorically do not live in a police state.

Hyperbole serves no one.”

“Agreed that that was stepping way out of bounds. Still doesn't begin to make us a police state.”

“We do not play by theirs because one day, your family or my family or some other innocent person might be mistaken for a terrorist and summarily shot. This does happen. This is why Canada and the USA became such bastions of freedom for people all over the world who lived in countries where they do shoot suspected terrorists on sight.”

Surfinby on Sep 26, 2013 at 12:07:24

“You are overlooking the article the comment is linked to. Dirie was a convicted terrorist who was released quickly from jail and then left Canada to kill people in Syria. He was not suspected of anything, indeed many charges were dropped, and he was convicted of what he confessed to after being first caught smuggling guns into Canada, then conspiring to attack Parliament in session. Of note Dirie was originally from Somalia which is not within Syria or Canada. It is expedient to type "Bastion of Freedom" but there are times when haven for criminal mercenaries might be a more appropriate phrase.”

“My understanding is that Chief Spence has been in office sine 2010. Most of the poor accounting practives (note - not accoutning irregularities, or fraud) took place before that. Also, this reserve has been co-managed with the Feds since 2000 and I didn't see them do anything about it until now. I hate to let facts get in the way of emotions, but maybe we all need to step back a bit from the brink here ?”

lladyon on Jan 18, 2013 at 17:24:25

“Wow. Don't get out much, eh? How pathetic that even the facts such as they are reported, numerous times, by various agencies, and media, still in your weak mind accumulate into excuses for her. How about you step back and think. The woman did NOTHING to help her OWN. I cannot believe how obtuse your opinion is.”

“Everytime I go abroad and return to Canada I get the feeling that I live in a police state. Maybe not Stalinesque, but it is very apparent that the rule of law will be enforced. I wouldn't mind that so much if the general population wasn't so totally prepared to support transgressions by the enforcers. In the days following the G20 last summer, the concensus in the comment sections across a wide spectrum of websites was that the hooligans got everything they deserved. I weep for Canada and it's un-questioning populace.”
