Sarah Palin: We Won The 'Duck Dynasty' Fight

Sarah Palin: We Won The 'Duck Dynasty' Fight

Commented Mar 9, 2014 at 10:05:24 in Politics

“I think people need to listen again, to what Phil and Sarah actually said. Neither spoke words of hate toward anyone. But it seems that the majority love jumping on and attacking anyone and slandering anyone who merely disagrees with others chosen lifestyle. One can say they do not agree or understand why someone lives the gay lifestyle and still love and accept the individual which many people do. They don't hate or attack them, they accept them but not the way they chose to live.”

“When did you choose to be straight? When did you decide to only be romantically attracted to the opposite sex?”

TotalTranquility on Mar 9, 2014 at 10:25:25

“Let's see, Stating that homosexual acts are a sin has in fact caused oppression, harm, and far worse to billions of people over the last few thousand years. That in fact makes it HATE SPEECH! It is also an ancient lie, created and perpetuated by people that have some form of aversion towards homosexuality.”

“I never agreed with her before, but she said nothing wrong. What she said about free speech is correct. Also, there is no homophia or bigotry in anything Phil or Sarah said. Just because one does not agree with anothers chosen lifestyle does not mean they are afraid of it.”

joelb5000 on Mar 12, 2014 at 08:33:34

“No chooses a lifestyle anymore than you woke up one day and chose to be straight. Seriously man, your talking points are ancient and have been throughly debunked.

And yes, everyone has free speech. That does not mean, however, that you have the right to not face any negative consequences for your speech. If a person says stupid things, especially on the air of a for-profit company, they shouldn't be surprised when the show suspends them.

And yes, calling gay people no different than zoophiles is indeed bigotry.”

Fran Jaime on Mar 12, 2014 at 04:00:45

“1. The incident had nothing to do with the First Amendment.
2. Robertson's comments were homophobic and racist.

“Referring to my sexuality as my "chosen lifestyle" disqualifies anything you say about gay folks from being taken seriously. Well, that and the whole "homophia" bit.”

juanjo on Mar 10, 2014 at 16:57:52

“As others have noted the government did nothing to stop Mr. Roberson from engaging in his fake "country folk" schtick. What happened is he offended people and they approached his "employer" about his nonsense. Mr. Robertson has every right to say what he wishes. And people have every right to criticize what he says. Free speech has never meant that anyone gets a free pass or the ability to say as they wish without there being a response from those who disagree.

This is no different than when Ms. Palin gets on her soapbox and criticizes some company or individual for doing or saying something she doesn't like. Is she stifling their free speech?”

Comeonman1 on Mar 10, 2014 at 12:28:48

“Since all you amateur linguists always try to break down the word "homophobia" to it's root words, without considering the fluid and dynamic nature of language, I'll help you out. Merriam-Webster defines homophobia as: : irrational fear of, aversion to, or discrimination against homosexuality or homosexuals.

TotalTranquility on Mar 9, 2014 at 10:31:46

“Homophobia encompasses a range of negative attitudes and feelings toward homosexuality or people who are identified or perceived as being lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. It can be expressed as antipathy, contempt, prejudice, aversion, or hatred, may be based on irrational fear, and is sometimes related to religious beliefs.

Stating that homosexual acts are a sin is hate-speech! It has caused nothing but oppression, harm and far worse to billions over the last few thousand years.”

jonathan 12 on Mar 9, 2014 at 10:14:01

“A widely held misconception of the definition of the word phobia is that to be phobic of something you MUST be afraid of it. That is wrong. You should try looking up the definition of the word phobia. It means and extreme dislike OR fear. Fear is not a necessary component.

And what she said about free speech is technically not correct because it never had anything to do with free speech as defined in the constitution unless I missed the news reports of Phil being prosecuted in Federal or State court for saying what he said.

Free speech applies to freedom from government limitation of it, not from the general public being offended by it and calling you out on it or your employer for that matter.”

Given this, Robertson's 1st amendment rights were not infringed upon. The backlash toward his statements are other people exercising their 1st amendment rights.

Also, disagreeing with someone's lifestyle is very different than not allowing other citizen's civil rights due to who they are. Her comments were comprised of bigotry and heterosexism(a more accurate word).”

“I am a firm believer in allowing citizens to own guns. However, I also believe in firearms training courses. I live in Canada, I am retired military and also have a firearms license. Here we need to take a course, one for non-restricted firearms and another for restricted firearms if we want it. Once the course is succesfully completed, we then send away for our license. This prcess includes the RCMP to do a thorough backround check. (Criminal records check, checking with references you supply etc) If you succesfully meet the requirements you are issued your license. We are allowed rifles, which include semi-auto but limited to 5 round magazines. Except 22 cal rifles which are not limited to 5 round mags, we can have much more. We can have hand guns. Calibres are not limited for either rifles or hand guns. The only thing we can not have are fully auto weapons. Now that being said, criminals do not obey laws, and if they want a specific weapon, they will get it.”

OhioYippieHippie on Dec 17, 2012 at 09:03:44

“Get rid of criminals. End the Drug War and watch what happens to crime in 10 years. Look to Portugal, Switzerland, and Holland on a more progressive addiction focused drug policy. It is a public mental health issue, prohibition causes criminality fueled by an overpriced drug market. Guns are merely a tool of players in this market. Most gun murders can be directly tied to drug trafficking or drug activity.”

Summertown on Dec 17, 2012 at 08:57:11

“I've been mulling over this same subject, training. The thing I'm not certain of is limiting it to time of purchase. My Father began teaching me about guns and shooting when I was about ten years old. I was taught the proper handling and care and the seriousness of a hand gun. Those lessons have stuck with me 50 years later.

I had one handgun in my possession in my early 20's. Then for the next 20 years my life did not require having one. When we moved to the country and it became obvious that our lives had changed we again became gun owners. Those lessons I learned as a child firmly in place.

There have been too many accidental shootings. Many times it was from the lack of care from an adult who probably never had a Father who taught them the lessons I learned from mine. And waiting to train an adult who can be extremely pigheaded with the "I don't need training" attitude I'm not certain the lesson gets drilled home as deeply as if the teaching began at a young age.”

People also need to realise that there is a great difference between a person who follows Jesus and religion. I do not agree with the lifestyles some people choose to live, but I still love them and respect them as people. I have many friends who live in a manner I do not think is healthy, but we accept our differences and remain good friends.
I must also say, a church that is worth billions, worships a man adorned with jewels and preecious metals the whole while people around the world suffer does not receive my respect.

I mean if you find that someone's lifestyle is unhealthy, whether you admit it or not, you have to see your lifestyle as better so that puts you on a pedestal. To me, friendships really have to be 100% equal as to how we feel towards one another. If not, I consider them acquaintances. I'm looking forward to your answer.”

My point is, I think Jesus definitely, historically, existed, but to say that he is the one and only way to eternal salvation? What do the other religious texts say? I haven't found anyone able to convince me that the Bible has more merit than any other religious texts and documents. I don't know.

People believe Jesus is the way to salvation because he was borne of Virgin Mary. Here's an interesting article talking about the science of virgin births:

People didn't know of this kind of stuff so they had to make up stories and put it all into one book called The Bible.”

“"But just because a person rejects Christ does not mean He is not real."

No, but the lack of historical evidence he ever existed means he's not. Your "faith" in Jesus was created by religion. You cannot separate the two. Faith is simply believing in something when there is no sound reason to. Your particular faith is simply placed in a person which was created essentially by Emperor Constantine. Your faith is a religious faith, there is no difference my friend.”

“Why don't you turn to the Easter Bunny instead? Or Santa Claus? Do you believe in unicorns as well? I am serious about all these questions. What is it about "Jesus Christ" that makes you willing to ignore reason and logic? I'm interested. Convert me.”

“nor does it mean he is real either... but if folks judge based on your views, then it is best to simply ignore them and find real friends...”

“"Religion is an institution. I see more and more people hating religion." I agree with this and would add: hating the hypocrisy of so many who call themselves religious but who don't live and act according to what their faith preaches. Wether you call your god Jesus Christ or anything else is irrelevant. Spirituality is something everybody need, but is not necessarily only found through the structures of a flawed human institution called religion.”

“You are like that youtube rap video about jesus not the church that was popular a while back. It's simply not true. The idea of Jesus only exists because of religion. The very definition of your salvation was provided by that institution. Trying to differentiate those things is absurd.”

“It's not a hateful post, but I do object to your didactic tone. As an atheist, I think Christ (if he existed) had a great and valuable philosophy. It's the whole "son of god" thing that bothers me and makes no sense. I actually think that Christ's message, for his time, is even more powerful if it came from a real man, than setting him above us as some mystical half mortal being (a la Achilles). Side by side with Buddha and Confucius, he's in good company.”
