“Im not sure our ancestors were quite as benevolent as you think. When Jacques Cartier landed on the shores of the St Lawrence he erected a cross saying Long live the King of France taking possession of the territory in the name of the king. He then kidnapped two sons of an Iroquois leader who later died in France. You gloss over the lengthy history of warfare between French-English-Native groups, all with varying allegiances, motives and resentments.
Even if another referendum were held, why should we give credibility to its outcome if 'yes', when separatists have refused to take 'no' as an answer even after two definitive referendums. The separatist movement in Quebec is merely repeating history, forcing English and non-french citizens out of Quebecd driving them from there homes much like the colonizers of the 16th century did to native peopls.
People who have immigrated seeking better lives and people who have indeed been here their whole lives have just as much right to claim Quebec as their home irrespective of cultural background. The French family culture isn’t the only family culture despite what you may think good sir. There is a culture still looking for a right full place to call home, but it’s not just the French-speakers who are the only ones deserving to live and call la belle Provence their home.
I have spent many years of my life in Quebec, I love Qubec, but I hate its politics.”

“I agree with you for the most . You call it much better then i can , perhapes my argument is more about what i could stand to loose as a french canadian living in another part of Canada after my ancestors having spent twevle generations there before moving to Ontario. I would have to say that if the separtists were to win and invited all us french living out side of Quebec the chance to come back in or a Quebec citizenship i'd be standing with them for their cause , other wise i'd be standing with the rest of Canada . Dose this make sense .”

“Can one separatist just inform me why Quebec separatism is so much more important than recognizing any sort of claim by first nations to rights to their own self rule? Lets have that discussion first seeing as they are the only ones in this who ever actually faced true discrimination and genocide. But no separatist wants to talk about that. In my opinion if Quebec votes and leaves, no problem. But while were dividing up the country lets at least be fair and recognize everyone who's entitled to a to taking back there ancestral land. Hell Quebec isnt even ancestral land for the Quebecois, it was forcefully taken from the first nations by the French and English. Thats the real injustice, and they are the true nation within a nation, French and English just colonized that and we still bicker over who gets to rule what. What a joke.”

Da Heglish French Guy on Mar 20, 2014 at 11:24:09

“I like to think when i read the history books for Quebec and know that where my ancestors in the 1600's came to make their home and live along side the Native people that it was the english law's of the 1700th century that went to work to put our Native people and keep them where they are today and not the average French people of that time . In the early sixty's while in grade school in my french community , old lady "Olsen" was teaching us the history lesson on how we fought the natives back and put them on reserve's and that was the end of them when i spoke up trying to say , that one day their numbers will multiply and they will be back , when she broke the cartilage in my left ear by twisting it raising me up out of my chair telling me i was unruley and needed to behave . A meeting was then called for my parents to explain my behaviour and to listen to her go on for the longest time on how i should be handled , after this my father then stood up and said "we don't have a problem with him at home" and left the building . After four hundred years the french family culture unlike the english what ever .. it's still alive and looking for its right full place to call home , that what i know .”

Not that it's impossible for him to know all this but the odds that this kid is able to reason all of this on his own seems (at least to me) very unlikely. If it is genuine then as someone mentioned earlier he probably has very well educated parents who exposed him to this kind of thought. More likely this is just a clever ruse by someone who wanted to make a video with there views who knew that it would get a lot of hits. When the 2nd amendment was drafted America was a vast untamed wilderness amid revolutionary times and imperial rulers for which the need for organizing militia and resistance was a stark and real possibility. Today we live in a world of established borders and nations not to mention nuclear weapons... Guns are pointless unless your waging civil war. But maybe thats what these conservative NRA nut balls are advocating, in which case we will be seeing even more bloodshed...If only I werent an atheist I'd say, "God have mercy on us all".”

“The counterfactual reasoning you employ here has no substantive merit. If that were the case I could say anything on the basis that if something else had got in the way it couldve stopped him. Therefore, the argument that stricter gun laws, or outreach programs to curb gun culture in America are also equally valid as methods that could have been employed to stop the shooter... I think you are misguided in your approach to how this could have been avoided. Not saying Im right, but I sure dont see how one counterfactual is better than the other especially since they are based on hypthetical realities.”

“I love how half hearted and, if I may, polite, a flag protest this seems to be. While in other separatist nations or countries with real grievances they burn it and chant death threats. The polite French Canadians merely stand around gawking at an untarnished flag and then stamp on it while holding their morning coffee like a bunch of yuppies. The modest and not so radical, polite nature is a testament to how French-CANADIAN! they really are. Stop complaining about living in one of the best god damn countries in the world. Why does one language nation mean so much to you? I live in Toronto and half the time people speak languages around me I never even heard of. In certain neighborhoods speaking English well means you are in the minority. Get over yourselves PQ separatists, the rest of Canada and Quebec dont care about your petty differences that get us nowhere.”

“"deep ocean is fairly lifeless" a fairly simpleminded incompetent statement. Also if your unaware submersibles are largely becoming unmanned elimanting the harms to humans... Oh your right deep sea pressures are more harmful to humans than the VACUUM of space, where do you get off, thats like saying snake venom is bad but not as bad as hydrogen cyanide. Your not simply drilling for oil down their there either, there are geothermal and biochemical vents that we have only just begun to understand and if could be harnassed would actually be more benificial and environmentally friendly than oil. Actually these natural underwater vents produce poisonous chemicals each day and animals thrive under these impossible conditions. Lets study and fund missions to the most clearly misunderstood and neglected part of the Earth than study the overwhelming lack of life and uninteresting geological activity on the dead planet Mars. ”

“Millions of dollars spent on looking for dead microbes.. What a waste of resources. We spend so much time and resources visiting dead planets and yet we know less about what is in our own oceans. We have detailed maps of Mars, Venus and the moon but we know less about he deep ocean. Not only that the ocean contains more resources, animal life and mystery into the origins of life on this planet than anything on mars. I'm all for space exploration but NASA simply gets to much of the pie while oceanic researchers are left in the dark without adequate funding or public enthusiasm. Congratulations NASA for technological innovation but shame on you for using that technology to discover and research absolutely nothing that benefits humanity here on earth.”

icstars on Aug 6, 2012 at 12:57:08

“If you want to learn more about how planets work, you study planets.

NASA does participate in studies of our oceans, gathering quite a bit of data for researchers, for examples:

grant06 on Aug 6, 2012 at 12:56:12

“Your abject rejection of any benefit from planetary exploration is both myopic and incorrect. As far as deep ocean research is concerned, there is much less promise of human benefit to such research than there is to that being learned about the other planets. Frankly, the deep ocean is fairly lifeless and much more dangerous to humans than even the vacuum of space. There is certainly plenty of room for ALL areas of research, but personally I'm sick and tired of most of our science budget going to finding yet another insane place to drill for oil”

“A lot of good points I agree with have already been made here so I wont reiterate to much other than what I feel. The seal hunt although barbaric and ugly looking should be left largely to inuit hunters as a means of living. Commercial sealing seems rather pointless if the market just isnt there. Even if the market were there Im not sure Id support commercial sealing. I think its true that people get worked up about the seal hunt because they are so cute and innocent looking, but lets face it if you are demanding the end of a slaughter to one animal you should be against all forms of slaughter. Im still unsure where I stand on this issue. I want the bloody slaughter to end but if it provides a real subsistence for inuit folk let them hunt. We let hunters shoot deer with semi-automatics and that dosent get the bad rap seal slaughters do. I think there is a double standard here”
