Ian Llangan on Jul 18, 2014 at 13:20:12

“You do realize Christian that more and more of the lead stories are reverting to the dreaded FB commenting format - which is garnering almost zero comments (or eyes, or clicks). If the Canadian edition goes that way, one does hope that you have your resume/CV all polished up, because it will be the final death-knell for Canadian readers.”

“Good questions, Butch. And I doubt we'll ever have a definitive answer. I would, however, put money on humans over aliens. Though the latter is much more exciting possibility. As for how these big beasts were taken down, I do recall reading a passage in Jared Diamond's great Guns, Germs and Steel about how many mammals had not yet learned to fear humans when they first reached a continent. A certain level of docility would have made them somewhat easy pickings for early humans. And I'd imagine, when it comes to bringing home the bacon, giant sloths and woolly mammoths were quite a prize.”

“I appreciate Mr. Sinclair's optimism but what is there left to sweat - or if you can remember what you were worried about five minutes ago. So many elderly have dementia or Alzheimer's and that's a very sad place to be - early stages or late it doesn't matter - and, In addition there are all of the regular problems macular degeneration, diabetes, cancer, heart problems, hearing, walking, swelling.... I have been told by more than several elderly people that they were just tired and they were done. It wasn't a suicidal thought it just is. I agreed with them because they don't want smoke and mirrors. I love the people that live where I work - they are the most intriguing and sincere people I have ever met. The baby or kitten thing is a nice idea but a lot of them don't want to be around a crying baby - and cats shed.”

“A very good question, Douglas. I'd like to imagine longevity might make us a little less-short-sighted -- and maybe even capable of seeing a bigger picture beyond what we can hoard in our relatively brief stint on the planet.”

Liban CZ on Apr 26, 2014 at 07:56:07

“hoarding is important, for not to want to go at the end.”

Douglas Sinclair on Apr 25, 2014 at 18:57:14

“From the elders I meet and have known I think that's true. The longer view that involves not sweating the small stuff so much and taking enjoyment in the moments such as meeting a new-born baby or even kitten. The real evidence of life. When in doubt, ask an elder - our most under-utilised natural resource.”

It may be that we have netted more jobs, but that doesn't mean that the median income is rising. I'd like to see the stats that reveal that the median income is actually rising. Previous reports have indicated that most of the new jobs created are part-time and low wage. And at this point, it is unclear how many of those "new" jobs went to temporary foreign workers.”
