The Best Place To Live Is Canada, Compared To The World

The Best Place To Live Is Canada, Compared To The World

“No question! Just so you know how infrastructure was rated, according to the report:

Quality of road network
Quality of public transport
Quality of international links
Availability of good quality housing
Quality of energy provision
Quality of water provision
Quality of telecommunications

The average of this made up 20% of the score. (Vancouver got 92.9, Toronto got 89.3.)”

“Sorry for the confusion! The slideshow came from this story (http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2014/06/27/canadian-fast-food_n_5537617.html) which was about the fast food from American chains that actually originated in Canada.”

Naturally Skeptical on Jul 17, 2014 at 12:37:59

“Regardless, Rebecca, Harvey's should be in there. Harvey's is far superior to any of those American chains.”

“Agreed (on much of this!). We used calories and fat because, really, they're the easiest to "see", but absolutely, sodium (and sugar and carbs) are all huge factors in the healthiness of what we eat.”

twinkleysnot on Jul 7, 2014 at 11:07:19

“One of the big numbers I care about is Fibre! I try to check that along with calories to make sure I am taking in enough. I do like these run downs to keep in mind, particularly when I am on the road for work and not able to prepare food myself. Thanks!”

“To be fair, that wasn't what we asked them to do. However, a few parents did specify points in their days (driving kids to school, grocery shopping, etc.) when they felt they had the opportunity to make a difference (as opposed to the small things that also make a difference).”

DavidRothbauer on Jun 25, 2014 at 14:31:13

“I was being facetious.

I thought that whole "molding leaders" thing in McKay's missive was just kind of haughty, I was poking fun at that.

Personally I think everyone's primary goal in life should be to be happy so long as its not at another's expense.”

“Not at all - except that he seems to have missed the minute contributions of the fathers each and every day - and how what mothers do can also contribute to "shaping the minds" of their children.”

DavidRothbauer on Jun 25, 2014 at 12:36:34

“No where did I see the female half mention "Mold my child(ren) into leaders of tomorrow"

Wait, I didn't see that on the male side either...

I guess Peter is the only one who does that...”

“Yah, for the intellectually challenged he could have mentioned that the mothers (who the children spend most of their parent time with) have a great influence on the children...
We could then add "Captain Obvious" to his portfolio..
Are that much of an anti-Conservative or are you just dense???”

Commented Jun 14, 2014 at 09:56:12 in Canada Living

“I'm truly sorry you felt that way, Trevor. As the article's author (hi!), my intention was certainly to question the silly stereotypes that surround dads, not to add to them. I think dads deserve a lot more than the "giving advice/teaching how to bike" stereotypes they so often get, and that's what I was trying to say.”

Trev14 on Jun 14, 2014 at 11:12:00

“I had a big long reply, but then it got deleted or something. Maybe it's for the best. I'll just think of it as cognitive therapy.

Thank you for the nice things you said about dads. I appreciate it, Rebecca.”

“What do you mean, Trevor? How is it any different from articles about moms?”

Trev14 on Jun 13, 2014 at 16:58:46

“I'm not suggesting the author intentionally tried to downplay her compliments, I just felt that the language used was a little washed out and forced. It differs from articles about women insofar as there isn't an article [about women] out there that doesn't absolutely gush about how great women are, and how much better they are then men. It's never been more clear than it has lately, that any article that says something good about men, cannot do so without an equal and opposite reaction.”

“Thanks Rebecca, but I was being a little facetious. I'm 5'10, which is neither tall nor short.
But I've recently been thrown into the dating world after a 21 year hiatus, and noticed that there are lots of women on the dating sites who specify that they won't even talk to someone who isn't at least 6'2".
That's like if I were to specify "nobody with less than a D cup need contact me". Pretty shallow, eh?”

“That's something Dr. Goldman mentioned extensively in our interview. One saying he mentioned is pretty common in medicine: "If you lack empathy, there’s two ways to get it - one is to be a patient and one is to be the loved one of a patient." I think cynicism is a problem in any job, but it's particularly awful when your job is to deal with people.”
