“You said "and possible other viral diseases" - which was why I made the comment about the impossibility of a "magic vaccine that would protect you from all viruses". Granted, that's not exactly what you said, but for every lab doing any sort of viral research to drop all other avenues of immunological study and go after this one pathway would certainly be putting all of our eggs in one basket...ESPECIALLY since the study you are citing hasn't even translated into clinical trials. These are animal studies, and there's no guarantee that there will be a clinical translation.”

“Clearly your bio degree didn't place much emphasis in virology. Hoping for a magic vaccine that would protect you from all viruses is ridiculous. Viruses come in all shapes and sizes, coated in a variety of protective proteins or uncoated, utilizing RNA or DNA to hijack and take over their host's cells.

Also, you can't fund research on the premise of "intellectual curiousity." There has to be a specific aim with a direct translational benefit.”

http://www.nih.gov/news/health/jul2010/niaid-15.htm Here is the universal flu vaccine NIH is pouring money into so maybe you should read the journals before you lecture others about viruses.

Those two labs should be doing this research or have their gov. money from Europe and the US withdrawn.”

“Unfortunately, accepting climate change due to human activity would then require collective introspection as a species. We would have to re-evaluate our choices in fuel, food, and recreation. Skeptics such as Richard are going continuously dispute evidence for the simple reason that accepting the facts presented to them would require a concurrent commitment to lifestyle changes. Using a weak assembly of facts cherry-picked to support a predetermined conclusion simply allows them to feel less like stubborn children about it.”

Having An Only Child: Is It Selfish?

Commented Jan 12, 2012 at 16:29:58 in Parents

“Though I'm sure this will spawn a little anger from parents of multiples...I think sometimes it can be selfish to have MORE than one kid. Having only one child means - if you are a decent parent - that YOU are the primary playmate when your child comes home. I have heard multiple parents say that they're having another so their child has "someone to play with." And while that is perfectly fine...having an only child means that someone to play with has to be you! Hats off to the parents of onlies who undergo the enormous balancing act of being disciplinarian, playmate, parent, confidant...etc. And parents of multiples, hats off to you as well, if you are raising happy, healthy children!”

Theresa Cavender on Jan 13, 2012 at 09:41:51

“No anger here! I have 2 boys, I grew up with 3 sisters and cherish that bond we had and still have. We are a huge support system for each other still to this day. I had another child because I wanted them to have that support system for each other when I am no longer here. And they are a great support system for each other they are 9 and 13 and they are the best of friends. They are supportive of each other in bmx racing and in their freestyle riding and they also leaned on each other heavily as well their father and I during their grandmothers funerals. Both passed away within a year of each other from cancer and they helped each other through that in a way that I could not have. My husband never understood the logic of having 2 cause he was on only but he does now.”

“A sibling does NOT guarantee a person who will be there for you for the rest of your life...perhaps the little brother/sister you never had would have been a companion and confidant to you, and perhaps he would have been a drug addict who pawned your wedding ring...

I agree with Z...only children definitely tend to have a romanticized view of siblings.”

The Working Mom Vs. Stay-At-Home Mom Debate: Who Has It Harder?

Commented Jan 5, 2012 at 11:11:36 in Parents

“I think the debate isn't so much SAHM vs. working mom...it's "prepared mom" vs. "unprepared mom." I would LOVE to have a house full of kids - but I know that my professional life only makes it possible to support one child - emotionally, financially, etc - for now. My husband and I have a beautiful life with our son, and now we are working to advance professionally so we are in a good position to have more children. I realize that I don't know your personal story, but if you are living paycheck to paycheck and falling behind on your duties as a mother, then you didn't adequately prepare yourself for that many children. Staying at home vs. working is irrelovant, as long as the children's needs are met, that parent is doing their job.”

“It's up to the parents who undergo fertility treatments how many embryos they want to implant at a time. Five embryos could result in five pregnancies. While unlikely, that probably wasn't a risk the couple was willing to take. Most couples don't implant more than 2-3 at a time.”

Shannon Eileen Gold on Jan 4, 2012 at 17:21:57

“I know but the point everyone has made is that they are not twins... and I agree and mostly everyone gave a definition of what twins ( either identical or fraternal) are... I was just asking... I still why these children, beautiful they maybe, are considered twins if they were conceived 5 years apart.”

“I proudly breastfed my son, but for the life of me could never understand why women would WANT to do it in public...I was always afraid someone would grab my purse - and how in the heck would I chase them down with my kid swinging from my boob? not to mention pervs, offending people with more conservative viewpoints...etc.”

mom to Mm on Dec 28, 2011 at 14:27:31

“I guess with a screaming baby to feed I cared less about pervs and more about comforting my child. That, and my kids ate every 1-3 hours; how was I supposed to go out in public and NOT feed them? Just stay out for 30 minutes and then run home? I really couldn't care less who I offend either. It's the law.”

“There are times when it can't be avoided...airplane flights for example.
But I can't imagine choosing a busy store as a place to nurse.
I also remember when I returned to work (years ago) being told that they would not provide me with a place to pump and then kept me working for an hour or more past my shifts. These are the kinds of things that win my support for nursing moms now.”

CaptainObvvious on Dec 28, 2011 at 13:42:20

I know many families who have children born with disabilities, mental and physical, and they all say having a special needs child teaches the whole family about caring, family love and relying on the good Lord for the strength and wisdom to nurture that child. Thanks for a thoughtful reply.”

But they're not getting brand new sports cars or millions of dollars, they're getting a dress that probably retails for about $500, as one group's way of saying thank you for staying supportive of their husbands and countries after hundreds of nights spent awake worrying. It surprises me that someone like yourself who clearly has a generous spirit would turn his nose up at another act of kindness just because it happens to be less noble than your own.”

Interracial Marriage In The U.S. Climbs To New High, Study Finds

Commented Feb 16, 2012 at 11:33:47 in Weddings

“What about the amazing and unique cultures that make each race/ethnicity beautiful? If you pretend that you don't see the difference between people's physical appearances, you are also pretending that they don't come form a background with its own art, music, food, and history. I don't think we need to teach them to look at other people as people, "plain and simple." but to LOVE all people, plain and simple.”
