“Tobacco is legal and use is dropping with that discouragement... why would you think marijuana would be any different ... also there is only spotty evidence that marijuana is even harmful never mind as harmful as tobacco while there is a growing body of evidence to suggest it actually not only isn't harmful and is probably beneficial. The medical benefits are well documented and if you use your logic, we should criminalize alcohol AND smoking for everyone as well ... why not? They're harmful after all! /snark ... I wonder how THAT would go over in your world where the government has the right to dictate everything we consume without regard for our right to choose for ourselves whether we smoke or drink or do any of the other things we take for granted that we can do legally, that maybe you personally disapprove of ...”

The claim by theists is that god exists ... if so there should be evidence ...opinion and faith are not evidence ... the bible is not evidence ... a pretty flower or sunset is not evidence ... there is no need for an atheist to provide proof of something's non existence their proof is in the absence of any evidence to the contrary .. I cannot prove Santa doesn't exist either .. or the tooth fairy ... but we all accept that they are make believe because there is no evidence of their actual existence ... it's just fun to pretend they do exist. The person making the positive claim of existence bears the burden to prove WHY they hold this belief ... if they cannot do so then their belief is merely an opinion not based on fact.”

“Nonesense. Atheism is the disbelief in god(s). Many people in their evolution from a believer to a disbeliever are often reluctant to use the term "atheist" because of the negative social implications that have been successfully attached to the name and therefore remain "in the closet" as it were where it pertains to their atheism. It takes some courage especially in the theocracy that the US is becoming to admit you are an atheist and that is what I was referring to. Atheism is not nor has it ever been a "religion" it IS however a belief. That much I will grant you.”

“"Atheism is the disbelief in god(s)."

It is so for some people. It is not so for a very large number of other people for whom it is an advocacy, a belief in the non-existence of God.

Google "There is no God" -- with quotes so you get the exact phrase.

6.5 MILLION times this is declared.

It is a belief. It cannot be proven. Therefore it is a faith statement. Its advocates are evangelists and the billboards are proselyting.”

“I don't really care for the sign ... if the Christians want to keep their Jesus they can do so for all I care .. as long as they don't push it on me ... I approve of the fight to keep nativity scenes off PUBLIC land but I could care less if a church puts one up outside their building on their property. I do NOT approve of the tax free status of churches etc etc ... all fights worth having. There are lots of issues AA takes on that I do approve but this sign is mildly offensive even to me, while I personally agree with the sentiment ... it is too ambiguous in it's target audience ... I THINK the idea might be for folks wavering to take the step to atheism but it comes across as demanding true believers to abandon their faith, which I am sure they would find offensive, and I sorta do as well. I am as strong an atheist as it's possible to be, but I find a sign like that to not really be in the spirit of the season which is peace love and goodwill in my opinion ... live and let live .... surely there must be a better more inclusive message that would fit on a sign that would better represent atheists without being quite so dismissive ... like maybe ... "Christmas without Jesus is fun too! Join us!"”

Atheism does not exist. It is not a thing a person can take a step TOWARD.

Unless of course you are willing to admit that atheism IS a religion and thus has dogma, beliefs, groups, billboards and signs on Times Square! It has become a thing a person can take a step *toward* rather than the word used to describe taking a step *away* from something.”

“Nope. After I got married I never used birth control pills. I didn't take any hormonal supplements at all. Rarely sick and on no other meds. Had 2 kids (grown now) a stable healthy happy life. Married to the same man for 28 years now and going strong. But those 2-3 days before my period and in particular the LAST day before my period I would enter a funk and during those few days I was convinced the world hated me and I hated the world. Major depression every. single. time. Whenever I started feeling blue like that I knew my period was just around the corner and I tried to tell myself that whatever i was feeling now would go away as soon as it started ... and it always did.”

“Ditto! For 30 years I could always tell when my period was due based on the extreme sad/angry mood I suffered for 2-3 days before EVERY cycle. I learned to fight through it knowing that whatever was making me sad/angry would not seem so bad in a few short days but even so it was always a struggle to maintain an even keel for those few short days and sadly I failed as often as I succeeded. This report is pure bunk .... I know what I went through and it was not imaginary ... I did not fear menopause ...I welcomed it with open arms!”

My husband flew recently and had a choice between Westjet and Air Canada ... for him ... there was no choice at all ... he flew westjet ... paid slightly more, time was slightly less convenient but his conscience was clear. Air Canada's service is far less than what I have experienced on other airlines ... I remember bring proud of them as a company bearing our country's name ... those days are long long gone. If given the choice I would almost always choose a different carrier there are lots of them out there that give superior service at comparable prices.”

"The Hobbit" Frames-Per-Second Drama: Peter Jackson Responds To Critics

Commented Apr 28, 2012 at 19:41:55 in Entertainment

“Hobbits are not quite as stocky as the similarly-sized dwarves, but still tend to be stout, with slightly pointed ears. Tolkien does not describe Hobbits' ears in The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings, but in a 1938 letter to his American publisher, he described Hobbits as having "ears only slightly pointed and 'elvish'".[9] Tolkien describes Hobbits thus:
I picture a fairly human figure, not a kind of 'fairy' rabbit as some of my British reviewers seem to fancy: fattish in the stomach, shortish in the leg. A round, jovial face; ears only slightly pointed and 'elvish'; hair short and curling (brown). The feet from the ankles down, covered with brown hairy fur. Clothing: green velvet breeches; red or yellow waistcoat; brown or green jacket; gold (or brass) buttons; a dark green hood and cloak (belonging to a dwarf).[10]”

“Gas prices should be even higher ... only then will it force people to rethink their usage and wastefulness. It would also help spur even more dedicated research into alternative fuels and better gas efficiency vehicles. Yes I understand it will be harder on transportation companies etc but unfortunately that's the price we are going to have to pay, sooner or later anyway... and higher gas prices are the cost we should all bear in order to help us break this self destructive addiction to cheap fuel ... imo anyway.”

swarf maker on Feb 23, 2012 at 22:07:33

“Like it or not, our only viable energy alternative is nuclear. Wind and solar are much too expensive. More significant, none of these are worth a damn to power transportation, for that we need high energy density fuels like gasoline or diesel.

We are well past peak oil discovery. We are probably near peak oil production. Worse we are near the point where demand will exceed supply and real factors will start driving the price. The time to get replacements in place is about thirty years ago. But, unfortunately, humans are very stupid animals and we will wait until the oil is unmistakeably running out.”
