Canadians' Household Debt Grows; Albertans Double Ontarians On Borrowing

Canadians' Household Debt Grows; Albertans Double Ontarians On Borrowing

Commented Aug 5, 2014 at 20:48:55 in Canada Business

“I never understand what these numbers are from the reports. What is in the average? 4 in 10 canadians report mortgage debt. How many households does this number represent? The average new mortgage in Canada is say $250000. Assuming this is a household, and 4 in 10 account for half that many households?? But then the home ownership ratio is much higher than this.

Like all BMO reports incomprehensible.”

“Canada has not improved railway infrastructure for over 100 years. Inter city schedules for trains and buses are slower by 20 percent from 35 years ago. Most transit systems are slower. And Toronto in particular but all cities are surrounded by communities that cannot be walked at all. Streets could be half the width. The front lawns are wasted space, the obligatory lot sizes are unnecessary. You cannot walk to a shop or even to public transit.

Why is this? Cars are obviously a bargain and you cant live without them”

“I try to keep up on measures of wealth and income. I can never correlate the numbers. Statscan in 2012 said that average family net wealth was about 230,000. The Globe and Mail from some other source says 400,000. What is the difference? Note this is family wealth, so not all is in a legacy. Is the 100,000 legacies possible from all potential legators, or is it based on an analysis of estate final accounts.

Maybe but elderly Canadians except some lucky homeowners who benefitted from generations of inflation, dont have all that much from other statistics.”

“We dont chose to live in cities. In cities parks are nearby homes. Facilities are not that bad. In Montreal's plateau eg has public swimming pools, tennis courts, sports fields, rinks all at a pretty low price.

Most though chose to live in sprawling suburbs. Facilities if they exist are private, they are distant as is everthing a kid cannot walk anywhere.”

Always answer politely. If the questioner does not know something, here is your chance to help”

Eric Walter Schaffner on Jun 2, 2014 at 15:10:37

“Bonjour Russell,
