“If See were alive, the burden of proof would be with the person who came to his home, not with See. The question is not, "Where does it say he wasn't invited," the question is, "What proof is there that See invited the other person?" That said, See's behavior, if the report is accurate, was sufficient for the other charges.”

“Why are the two suggested reasons you posit negatives? Professors frequently take leaves for further study, for writing, for travel, and for myriad reasons other than addiction or mental problems. The reasons for his incarceration and his taking leave may be totally unrelated. It is sad that he died in jail. It is even sadder that so many people jump to assumptions about him rather than speculation regarding the number of suspicious deaths that happen in our jails and prisons.”

“Suing for a significant amount of money raises the bar and makes it more likely that he will give the dog back. You can buy a lot of poodles for $54,000. It could very well be that he is doing this not because he loves the dog, but because he is seeking revenge for being dumped. Whatever the reason, he stands a good chance of losing and it would behoove him to settle the matter by giving the dog back.”

Teacher Killings Bring Shocking School Violence Numbers To Light

“I taught for years before changing professions. In those years I had an M80 blown up in a waste basket next to my desk, numerous things thrown at me during class changes, and several thefts of books and personal items. When I reported the theft of my wallet from my locked desk, the administration recommended that I offer a reward for its return. Instead, I discovered the thief by relying on aid from some other students and reported the young criminal to the police. Because of the rules surrounding juvenile court, I don't know what happened to him, but he was absent from school for some time. Instead of the academician's reply that teachers need more classroom management instruction, I would suggest that schools begin to make it known that what is a crime on the street is also a crime in a school, and report all such activity to the police.”

sugarcreekchile on Nov 18, 2013 at 16:42:42

“I agree. I dislike the zero tolerance policy, also, that holds the student who defended himself against attackers equally responsible. My son, when in high school, was jumped in his seat on the school bus by 3 boys who were jealous of him. He successfully fought them off doing more damage to them than they did to him. When I received a call from the principal to come get him and learned that he was going to be suspended along with the other 3, I raised the roof when I got there. I told the principal to call the police because an assault is an assault no matter where it occurs and my son wouldn't be arrested for defending himself. Not wanting to involve the police, the principal backed down and my son wasn't suspended with the other 3.

Teachers shouldn't have to be at the mercy of out of control students. They need administrative support not more classroom management instruction to train them to be what? Prison guards? Agressive acts and crimes against teachers aren't lessened because they occurred in a school.”

Issues of improper prosecutorial procedure at the trial level, or judicial errors are probably the bases for the appellate losses, not overcharging.”

However, the GOP set its sites firmly upon preventing any Democratic legislation pass, refusal to negotiate in good faith, and making the government shut down, in an effort to damage the president. “So, now it is OK to shoot folks just because drugs are involved? Hmmm, this could get interesting. Of course, more guns would have made the situation safer, or at least more fun. And for those curmudgeons who think that shooting perps is a good idea, remember, even trained police officers miss more frequently than they hit their intended target. Heat of the moment is far different than target practice, or hunting. If they miss, how many average gun toting vigilantes would be highly accurate? So, more guns, more opportunities to shoot and get shot. After all, life is a lottery, no?”

“Since it only takes one well placed thrust to fatally stab someone, the shooting during the time the kidnapper was stabbing the woman certainly appears to be covered by the law requiring "reasonable belief" that the victim was in danger of serious injury or death. That there is an inquiry regarding the matter is proper because any death in such circumstances must be investigated. However, here the evidence seems convincing, and it is doubtful that charges will be brought against the shooter.”

“Free speech means that all are free, with some limitations, to speak their minds. The job of a university is to present the views of opposing sides of an argument in order that students can make rational decisions based on the logic of the speakers and the veracity of their statements. Too often, our society caves to extremism on both sides and permits one side or the other to prevent the proper exposition of controversial arguments. This can be seen, in a more pervasive way, in the prevalence of words condemned as politically incorrect, or offensive. What it leads to is a society that speaks one way while believing and acting in another. For a demonstration of this, look to our government. And, by government, I mean all parties, both the two majors and the also rans.”

Perhaps, just as highways in dangerous areas have signs, "Watch out for falling rocks," supermarkets, airplanes, and other places liable to experience the outrageous acts of undisciplined children, should display signs, "Watch out for running brats."”

“The theft of Social Security funds began long ago when congress, finding a surplus, which is abhorrent to them, decided to get some milage out of using those funds for disability payments and also to provide for various groups of "refugees". While I have no problem with providing assistance to those groups, I do have a problem with the money to do so being taken from Social Security. It is coming from people who no longer have the ability to earn more, and who count on their monthly check for survival. Now the government is thinking about reducing the pittance to those who worked and paid into the fund but I hear nothing about curtailing the checks to those who have made no contribution.”

peacekitten on Oct 21, 2013 at 00:15:03

“i am well aware that the theft began a long time ago, and became really bad under reagan, who was using it to make his abysmal economic record look better. the use of those funds for disability payments is nothing new, and is appropriate. the inclusion of survivors, for instance, goes back to its inception. i'd rather see the money taken from social security go to help other needy people than to pay for things like entitlements and welfare payments to the petrochemical industry, for instance. cut industrial welfare before cutting off any group of the needy.”

“Good sportsmanship and allowing an opponent to save face are noble indeed. However, it is foolhardy to bestow false praise on the man who single handedly prevented legislation that could have averted or speedily ended the economic damage to thousands upon thousands of American citizens who were without pay for 16 days. Not to mention those who could not get baby formula or diapers through WIC, or those who could not refinance their homes, or, or, or. This was not a game, it was too real. This nation was held hostage by not only the extreme right, but also by republican politicians who lacked the courage to stand up to the lunatic fringe. I do not advocate hurling expletives at the Speaker, but neither can I lie and say that I have any respect for him and his cronies. I honor the office, but he has dishonored it, our Constitution, and most important, the people of this country who rely upon congress to legislate honestly. I have voted for each party in many elections, both local and national. I believe that there is a place for a loyal opposition. However, there is no place for self-willed temper tantrums.”
