When I started my business, my purpose was clear: to leverage my communications skills in order to become wealthy. I learned that unexpected things happen along the way and I needed to live by some non-negotiable beliefs if I was to be happy in my work. So, three decades later I am still learning. This is where I've learned thus far.
Much is written in business circles of visualizing your success. Well for astronauts, it is quite the reverse, they spend considerable time visualizing failure; simulating what they would do if something went wrong -- and in space, the scope is unlimited. As business owners we need to do that too and be prepared for what could go wrong, with a plan B (or C) in our back pocket.
Years ago in another life, I used to teach a parenting course and lately I am finding that the lessons I learned and taught in that program have some relevance to what I see today, and especially in running a business.
Like others in Ontario, the ice storm caught us by surprise and we spent a very chilly few days without power and, living in the country, without water too. To be honest we weren't that prepared. We are now, I can tell you. But as business owners, we also have some lessons to learn from those tough few days that we can use in our business lives.
The euphoria of continually going back to the well and finding it full is, in my mind, short-lived and dangerous. No matter what your business, if your dreamy current sales projections are based predominantly -- or entirely -- on what you've produced before, you are in for a rude awakening.
Coming from a non-business background, I did learn plenty of new stuff in business school. blogging taught or reminded me of some principles that I could see scattered in my numerous textbooks. I have listed the lessons learned that are transferable to running businesses, followed by brief explanations.
As I reflect back on the past year, I realize I have learned a lot -- some of it the hard way, other lessons were a pleasant surprise, but like everything in life, you have to take the bad with the good, and the key is to learn the lesson and move on.
