Roger Covin, Ph.D | Posted 08.21.2012 | Canada Living
Roger Covin, Ph.D

I recently wrote about rejection phobia and the impact it can have on people's lives. One of the more tragic aspects of rejection phobia is how self-sustaining the problem can be. In fact, people who are rejection phobic ultimately fabricate their own reality that perpetuates their phobia and can leave them socially isolated.

How I Lost Friends Because of my Mental Illness

The more I pushed my friends away the worse I began to feel. Ultimately I was a consenting adult and they respected my wishes and backed off. Some of them, though, have backed off forever because my verbal abuse in a time of need was too much for them to handle. It is the biggest regret of my life.

Globe's Reaction to Jan Wong Depression Put Journalism in a Sad Place

Jan Wong was one of Canada's ace reporters. She won readers and admirers for the Globe and Mail. Then suddenly, a couple of years ago, she vanished from the pages of her paper. Why? Because she suffered from depression, and management refused to acknowledge the fact; they thought she was just being lazy. One has some sympathy with the Globe's misunderstanding, but it's come at the cost of the thinning of the ranks of honest frontline journalism.

For the past 16 hours I have been having an anxiety attack, my first in many months. I have been pacing around my apartment. I have been vocal with what its like to live with mental illness but a thought occurred to me earlier: Why not write a blog while I experience this anxiety attack inside of waiting until it's over and recollecting what it felt like?

When Mental Illness and Work Don't Mix

2012-05-07-mentalhealth.jpg Would you ever hesitate to tell your boss the reason that you have a runny nose is because you have the flu? The obvious answer to that question is, no. Then why do we hesitate to talk to our employer about mental illness? My dream is that anybody living with mental illness can have the same dialogue with their employers that I currently enjoy.

How I Knew I Was Living With Mental Illness

2012-05-07-mentalhealth.jpgWhile mental illness definitely can have physical symptoms, it's not visible like a broken bone or a deep cut, but I would argue the emotional pain is comparable. I live with anxiety and depression, two different mental illnesses, yet they both work hand in hand.

Depression Has Many Faces

2012-05-08-mentalhealth1.jpg Why is it so difficult to treat depression? Part of the problem is in our definition of the term. In fact, there are two distinct depressions: situational and clinical. It would be so much easier if we called the two depressions by different names, for then we could explain better how we feel and know better what might help.

Don't Believe This Research, Antidepressants Work

Marvin Ross | Posted 06.27.2012 | Canada

A research report on anti-depressant use out of McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario strikes me as a denial of mental illness and a denial of the need to relieve suffering from mental illness when we can. For those with a severe clinical depression, anti-depressants are needed.

Unwanted thoughts: Are They Really Dangerous?

Sometimes, while waiting for the subway, I imagine someone getting pushed in front of the train. Sometimes, you get thoughts of harming other people, of acts of sexual violence, or causing harm to children, of crashing your car while driving. This is normal.

Canada Survived the Downturn By Ignoring Keynes

Sustainable growth cannot be achieved with the Keynesian solution: more government spending, more debt, and more taxes. Our conservative government did pretty well since 2007: It did not lose control of its spending. It did not create unsustainable deficits. And today, Canada is on a clear path to a balanced budget.

Twenty-three years ago, I was young, in love, a new bride -- and eight months later, a widow. My new husband died by suicide. It completely caught me off guard. I was definitely still in the "honeymoon" stage and oblivious to any pain he quite clearly must have been experiencing.

Let 'em go. Let 'em make their own way until they change their minds and rejoin the club and adhere to existing rules. If that means another recession, or even a depression, better now than at some time in the future when damage will be even greater.

There is no rescuing Greece. If the country will not submit to regulations that people like Mark Carney would probably endorse, better that it not be propped up. Let it abandon the euro and revert to the drachma, until it comes to terms with itself.
