Love -- isn't that what Valentine's Day is all about? Mention chocolate pudding to a friend, even on the phone, you can feel their brain pleasure centres light up, their chest warm and their hearts fly open. Michael Smith told me he has built a career out of reminding Canadians that cooking is about the people you share the meal with rather than the perfection of the recipe. He then went about showing what he meant. In a wildly entertaining weekend at Deerhurst Resort, Smith held court and kitchen in the Muskoka property most famous for hosting Barack Obama.
I am 27. I live in the city. I love to cook. Due to my recent past, I have found myself eating alone more often. At first, eating alone was really difficult. I would shovel down a big bowl of something that was thrown together in minutes. At one time a chore, I now consider eating alone to be an art form. My goal is to instruct anyone to do the same.
Is your extra-virgin olive oil really what you think it is? How can you get a quality product that you trust? Get to know an olive oil producer, like Theo Rallis from Windsor, Ontario. Theo's extra-virgin olive oil is made by cold-pressing organic Korneiki olives that are grown on family-owned groves in a small Greek village.
When times get tough, the tough get...protein. Well, I do anyway. Protein-packed, blood sugar stabilizing snacks at the ready to power me through long days or hard-core workouts. And these little bites should preferably have the ability to be prepared well ahead of time and frozen, or be whipped up in an emergency energy situation with ingredients that I often have on hand.
Against the advice of our local guide in Bangladesh I tried this dish from a street food vendor. The dish is called Jhalmuri -- pronounced Chahl Mooree. It is Indian Puffed Rice and is a fun, very quick and very flavourful snack food. This dish is a great snack for football season and to spice things up for the chilly weather we are experiencing now in Canada. This recipe is my best attempt at trying to duplicate what I had on the streets of Dhaka.
My love affair with crispy, buttery, ridiculously-easy-to-make shortbread is fairly recent. It's probably only in the last year that I've discovered how fast these little cookies come together and how fun it is to play around with different flavours. After only 10 minutes of baking I had rosemary shortbread that I could snack on guilt-free (well... considering how many I've eaten I'm not sure that it counts as guilt-free any more).

But chin up fruit lovers, there's a new star in town! Pears! The deliciously fresh and lightly sweet quality of pears can be enjoyed in countless recipes and served in the comfort of your own home this fall season.
