I practised family law from 1985 to 2009 and was never so relieved in my life as when I finally stopped. From that vantage point, there were things that I was easily able to predict. One of them was that some men would be driven to suicide by the burdens the law thrust upon them.
Every time I tried to communicate with the father of my child, he turned it into an argument, chastised me, tried to humiliate me, or walked away. I felt helpless trying to have a decent and cordial conversation regarding the needs of our child with him.
Even from the very beginning of their split Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck show that sensitivity and devotion to the kids is the top priority. They're quoted by People Magazine saying, "We go forward with love and friendship for one another and a commitment to co-parenting our children."
When I tell people my co-parenting situation -- that I live next door to my ex-husband and his new wife -- I'm met with a combination of disbelief and praise. "Right next door?" they'll ask....
Father's day has passed. Now that the hoopla's over and the one day a year we spend honouring dad has passed, let's talk about the importance a father makes in the life of a child each and every day. Too many fathers are labeled deadbeat dads, often out of spite. And their children hear this.
The biggest role model we have for relationships is our parents, and teaching children how to have a healthy relationship is important. I really believe it's also important to teach them how to deal with relationships that aren't working, showing them it's okay to move on.
Back in 1995 when I started practising family law, the standard parenting schedule was pretty straightforward: The children resided primarily with one parent (almost always the mother). Well, things have changed. In recent years, I have witnessed a trend towards equal-time schedules, the most popular of which is "2-2-3."
Amicable divorces remain that way until a husband begins a serious relationship with a new lady. One of the easiest ways to have your divorce come "off the rails" is to flaunt a new paramour before your wife is emotionally ready, which in some cases is never.
Parents want their children to have the best experiences possible, but these occasions sometimes require altering an existing child custody arrangement. Still, if people can stay reasonable and focus on what is best for their children, it is possible that they can minimize stress.
