Now that he has gone the world feels like a darker and less intelligent place. Christopher Hitchens had no equal among public intellectuals working in the English language. The fact that I will never again hear that deep, dry voice, be in the presence of his mischievious smile, is even more painful than I expected.

When Christopher Hitchens was diagnosed with cancer, he could have turned to religion. He could have renounced his atheism to find comfort or solace in the notion of heaven or forgiveness. That he maintained his commitment during a period of such personal struggle shows a remarkable intellectual rigour.
