Recently, a parochial vicar in Edmonton added to the debate on an issue as trivial as the use of washroom facilities by a transgender student in an elementary Catholic school. In his seven-point missive, he seemed to justify the use of the words "mental illness" and "disorder" used by the Catholic authorities for transgender persons -- the parochial vicar can only speak for himself.
Let's remind ourselves that inaccessible abortion services do not eliminate abortions. The choice, or even necessity to terminate a pregnancy is a reality. Criminalizing abortion can lead to unsafe and potentially life-threatening options for many women in disadvantaged situations.
If our youngest citizens grow up not understanding their rights and freedoms, we may all find, likely too late, that we have lost something very valuable: our privacy.
