Dear Prime Minister Harper, I write to you as a Canadian, and as a survivor of having a loved one wrongfully imprisoned in Iran. I write to you knowing what it feels like every moment of every day a loved is held captive for political reasons alone. It is haunting. It is impossible to feel free.
On World Humanitarian Day, I think of all the remarkable people who risk their lives to save the lives of others. I think especially of Dr. Tarek Loubani, and Prof. John Greyson, arrested by Egyptian authorities last Friday, who are experiencing a horror far too similar to the horror I experienced almost exactly four years ago.
Saeed Malekpour was sentenced to death on October 2010 on false confessions he gave two years ago when subjected to physical and psychological torture. The release of Sarah, Shane, and Josh from Evin prison shows that we, as a community, can put a stop to yet another indictment on human rights.
