It can be tricky (and tempting!) to stick to your normal eating routine and daily dietary habits when traveling. The first thing to remember is to stay hydrated and reach for water wherever you go! It's super easy to forget to drink water while we're rushing to our destination not to mention the dry airplane air that you'll find if you're flying.

Empathy, sadness, joy and a sense of family are just some of the immediate feelings I had when I ended my FaceTime conversation with Dan Reynolds, lead singer of Imagine Dragons. Dan and I have something in common called ankylosing spondylitis, or AS for short. Instead of getting into a long, drawn-out medical definition, I will describe it like this: our bodies are attacking themselves, and there is no cure. Most of us AS sufferers have to deal with chronic pain 24/7.

Osteoporosis. It's the cause of over 80 per cent of all fractures in people over 50 That's more common than having a heart attack, stroke, and breast cancer -- combined. It affects us all at some point. Most of us think it's a problem that only women should care about. Not true.

I am a survivor of advanced melanoma: skin cancer which spread to my lymphatic system. I was able to receive eight powerful - and expensive - immunotherapy treatments which quite possibly saved my life. It never occurred to me that, should the disease come back, that I might not receive further treatment.
Do you find it difficult to maintain a conversation with older adults who are living with dementia? Many people find that once they get past talking about the weather, how they slept that night or what they had to eat today, they struggle to find ways to stimulate conversation in a way that is meaningful, interesting and mutually rewarding.

Pomegranates are often overlooked because they can be intimidating, and a pain to eat. One of my favourite pomegranate recipes is below. It marries together perfectly the sweetness of pomegranate, the spice of curry and the earthiness of quinoa.

Two decades of studies have failed to produce any smoking guns. It's now time that we all accept the scientific consensus -- GM foods are probably as safe to eat as non-GMO. But that doesn't lessen my opposition to genetic modification one bit.
With the days getting shorter and the weather getting colder -- all we want to do is light some candles and get cozy at home with some serious comfort food. Our slow cooker curried chicken stew is awesome for so many reasons. It's ridiculously delicious, budget-friendly and creates about four to six servings (depending on how hungry you are).

Especially over the winter, I love a hot breakfast and I just always seem to gravitate to more savoury combos like avocado toast or anything involving poached eggs and prosciutto. Oats are such a great way to start the day and these combos will have you energized and ready to take the morning!

As all smokers know, quitting is challenging and terrifying. It took 25 years of my doctor insisting I quit, before I was able to successfully stop smoking. I tried everything, including cold turkey and prescription medication; nothing worked. I knew I wanted to change my life around for the better.

We all have at least a vague idea of how our lives should look like. Most goals we set for ourselves are short- or mid-term. A long-range game plan or grand design is much harder to follow. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't take a closer look at what's in the cards for us from time to time.

Our food-obsessed culture is more interested than ever in sourcing their food locally, and local food experiences have become one of the primary travel motivators. Through a comprehensive study, we discovered the rise of food tourism is driven by the values of the modern consumer, specifically millennials, who look for immersive travel experiences.

It has been recognized for many years that people 65 years and older are at greater risk of serious complications from the flu compared with young, healthy adults because our immune defenses become weaker with age. While flu seasons can vary in severity, during most seasons, people 65 years and older bear the greatest burden of severe flu disease.

Staying positive in the midst of impending doom is extremely difficult. Networks of solidarity and communities bring us together to lament over our current circumstances and support one another during difficult times. In the virtual world, these networks and communities are more accessible to those of us that are like-minded but geographically scattered across the globe.

As dangerous as these rapid weight-loss practices are for adult athletes, the potential damage to young athletes is even scarier. In some sports, kids as young as eight years old using extreme measures to lose weight before competition.

I'm a mother of three young children, I have an executive husband that travels often for work, I have no family living nearby to help out. I have a lot of good reasons to say "I'm so busy." But the truth is, there are windows in my day for slowing down.

I know, we're only in November, but the end of the year is actually a great chance to re-evaluate your goals with enough time to prepare for the New Year ahead of you. So even though it may seem like an unconventional time to take stock of what you were hoping to accomplish this 2016, it's actually a great time to recognize your accomplishments.

Defining a role for microbes in stress has represented a major shift in the concept of dealing with this intrinsic part of daily life. By using probiotics with mental health benefit -- also known as psychobiotics -- people may be able to alter their stress levels by ingesting a probiotic formula.

Being a champion and enjoying many of the benefits of success as an athlete can be great. What they don't tell you is that the same body you put through so much now will be the same one you have to stick with as you grow old.

There's a new trend happening around town and it's one that may be catching on. Consider this my civic duty to spread the word and stop the idiocy of being legislated. That's right -- schools are now trying to tell me what I can and can't put in my kid's lunchbox.

An emotional support animal is exactly what the name says: an animal who provides emotional support. It's something I had heard about from college friends who wanted an excuse to keep a furry friend in their apartment, but I never thought it was a legitimate thing.

One of the buzzwords in the medical profession is something called "patient activation." That's the challenge of enlisting regular people in health maintenance. To state it more plainly, it's all about trying to get people interested in saving their own lives. Which seems like it should be pretty easy, doesn't it?

Excessive noise in a health-care environment is not just annoying but studies have shown that it adversely affects patient healing. A U.S. study found the average noise level in hospital wards to be close to 95 decibels -- 10 decibels beyond the noise level at which U.S. federal law requires ear protection for prolonged exposure.

The child with ASD must learn to identify a broad range of emotions and corresponding facial and body expressions, then encouraged to tune into their bodies and rate the intensity of their emotion using a "feelings thermometer." We feel what we feel. Although our emotions are always valid, our thoughts about a given situation are often skewed and in need of revision.

Engaging all of your senses to commune with nature sounds a bit hokey. But it is part of a growing movement that recognizes green space is more than just lungs for the Earth. Nature is also vital to the well-being of people -- not just hippies -- and hard science shows it can help address real health concerns.

When one is in business it can sometimes feel like you are on a desert island; alone, adrift and not quite certain what the escape plan should be. What used to seem like plenty of time nine months ago is now a case of, "Holy you-know-what! I only have less than three months left of the year!" and one or more of the following issues is raising their ugly head

The Canadian Cancer Society is urging Canadians to get their children vaccinated against HPV -- a safe and effective way to prevent the cancer-causing infection. Despite many studies showing that the vaccine is safe and effective, a number of myths persist about HPV
We need to recognize and respond to the reality that many families need education, resources, and access! Shaming parents, shaming kids while at school, and banning or removing things does not encourage self-esteem or critical thinking -- and I'm pretty sure that is one of the reasons we send our kids to school!

Get active as a family. Working out together is a great way to squeeze your workouts in without squeezing out family time. Even if you're doing a workout you don't particularly love, it's more enjoyable when you're in the company of the people you do love.
Many women suffer vaginal and sexual health problems in silence as they age but few discuss it with their doctors. Despite being a society saturated in sexual images, important, helpful sex information about conditions like vaginal dryness, painful sex and low desire simply are not discussed.
October 17 is the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. It is to recognize all children, in rich countries as well as in poor, who are left behind because their families lack income and their societies fail to reach them with the services they need. It's time to end child poverty in Canada. It's entirely possible and there are promising steps.
