Technological changes - such as the mass adoption of the Internet - are reshaping the way we think about work and creating new kinds of opportunities for many. But for Albertans to fully seize these opportunities, the provincial government should ensure that its labour laws facilitate flexibility in the labour market.
In 2014, alone, almost 8,000 youth ages 15 to 19 were injured on the job in Canada. Another 13 lost their lives, according to the most recent statistics from the Association of Workers' Compensation Boards of Canada. Many parents don't realize their children may not legally be old enough to do some jobs.

History has shown that when workers act collectively in their workplace they can improve their wages and working conditions. Such collective action has resulted in critical improvements in health and safety standards for workers and for decent wages and benefits.

Living wage laws can also lead to higher municipal taxes. This occurs because municipal governments are typically the customer of firms affected by living wage laws. And this unique arrangement allows businesses to more easily pass on the artificially higher labour costs to their customer rather than scale back on employment.
This year I'm thankful for things like a good home and a family to share it with, and the ability to provide for that family and to help our children pursue the opportunities in their lives. I'm also thankful for having been a member of a union which made all that possible. But for this year, too many families are struggling in low-paying and precarious jobs that make it difficult -- if not impossible -- to provide a decent standard of living for their loved ones.
