It must be a huge relief for the members of a jury when an eight-week trial ends, but even so, it's not often that half-a-dozen jurors dissolve into tears and sobs in the courtroom immediately after announcing their verdict. Yet that's exactly what happened at the end of the David and Collet Stephan trial, and it gives us an opportunity to discuss how Canada's legal system may be failing jurors.
My journey has taken me to Team Canada with the hopes of securing a spot at the Paralympic Games in Rio. I hope that my story can enlighten others about the devastation that meningococcal disease can cause, and also show others going through similar situations that you can do anything once you set your mind to it.

So far at the trial, none of the prosecution's doctors has claimed that they could have definitively diagnosed meningitis from the symptoms Ezekiel exhibited at the time. None has claimed that Ezekiel could definitely have been saved, even if he had received aggressive treatment.
Each time a child encounters one of a number of pathogens, such as the flu, bacterial foodborne illness, and some of the common cold viruses (but not rhinovirus), the immune system not only responds to fight, but also remembers the invader at the molecular level.
Children (and adults) in Ontario should receive a routine schedule of vaccines against a long list of diseases. If your children aren't up to date on those vaccinations, I urge you to make a doctor's appointment now. Vaccination is one of the most important things you can do to protect the health of your family.

Vaccines are the only effective prevention we have, but right now they are only available against certain strains of the disease. I believe that all Canadians need to get vaccinated, but families and medical professionals still need to remain vigilant and know the signs and symptoms, in order to get the proper medical help before it's too late.
