The U.S. won't get a better relationship by ignoring the Kremlin's efforts to run roughshod over the most fundamental institutions in U.S. democracy. Doing so sends one message and one message only: that the American president is weak, inviting further interference in U.S. domestic affairs.

I asked myself: what would it have been like to be Svetlana Alliluyeva, the princess in the Kremlin? No one could encounter her without knowing she was the daughter of the Vozhd (leader), which meant danger, risk. In the course of researching Svetlana's life, I interviewed over 40 people. Anyone interested in just how much Russia has changed since the days when it was the Soviet Union should examine what's called the "Pussy Riot" case. Having interrupted a church service with a political protest, they are facing several years in prison. But the Pussy Riot girls likely have no appreciation of how lucky they are. In Stalin's time there'd be no publicity, no public trial, no knowledge even of the girls staging a political protest inside a cathedral. They'd just disappear.
MOSCOW - Exit polls cited by Russian state television showed Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's party with less than 50 per cent of the vote in Sunday's parliamentary elections, a significant drop reflec...
