The statistics are alarming. Nine out of 10 start-ups die at five years. I know the challenges personally because I'm on my eighth start-up now. From selling one of my successful ventures to Arlene Dickinson of the Dragon's Den, to some not so fruitful ventures, I have had my share of wins and losses.
As competition grows, sales become more complex and digital technology replaces traditional relationship-building. It can be challenging for some sales professionals to break through. Successful professionals stay ahead of the competition through constant self-education, they make the most of their network to win referrals and make new connections while remaining positive and proactive.

I used to think that the more people I reached out to, the more business I would earn. I soon realized that's just working harder, not smarter. That misguided approach burns up physical and emotional energy faster than a match set to dry grass.
The pitch you spent days or weeks preparing for is over. You think you made a good impression. After scanning the room and looking for feedback from your prospective clients, you get no sense of whether you have won the business.Thank them for their time, shake hands and make a decisive but gracious exit. The real test begins.

We often take this time to reflect on our personal lives, but as small business owners it's an excellent opportunity to examine our professional lives as well. Less daunting than a business plan, meaningful resolutions can give your organization a fresh look at its direction and ultimate goals.
One of the best pieces of advice I've ever received as it relates to starting or building a business is this: Get a board of directors. Why would someone running a business want a board of directors? That's a great question and here is my humble opinion: Starting and running a company is hard work and at times it can be damn lonely.

The company creates the yummiest custom-made protein bars on the planet! What impresses me the most is that Ava redefines what being a female Baby Boomer means -- she's active, fit and she started a business at an age where most think of retirement. She took what others would consider a huge risk, but in true entrepreneurial spirit she fearlessly took a great idea to market!
So how do you find that first customer? I've often written about finding the perfect customer but at this stage in your business, the cynic in me says any warm body will do as long as they pay their bills. You will quickly learn who you like to work with and later you can afford to be more discerning.
