Hey SMU, There's No Funny in Rape

When 80 student leaders (both men and women) at Saint Mary's University stand up to chant an utterly despicable chant about non-consensual sex with minors to a group of 300 freshmen, sorry, but that's crossing the line, and I absolutely fail to see the humour in it. To casually dismiss what happened at SMU as an isolated issue with a flippant shrug of the shoulders is to negate the very real fact that we don't live in a post-feminist world, and there continues to be a very strong link between how women are perceived and the disrespect and violence actively and routinely shown to them in everyday life.

At These Libraries, Kids Take Out More Than Books

If you're a parent who is strapped by a limited income but still wishes you could spoil your children with various toys, an alternative solution might be closer than you think. Most family and community centres have toy libraries, where parents can sign out toys for their children for a couple of weeks at a time, then return them for others to use.

A French-Canadian Enclave in Nova Scotia

Cheticamp, at the southwestern entrance of the national park, is the most eye-catching community on the Cabot Trail because the colourful houses, many of them painted in the blue, red and white symbols of the Acadian people, stand out and invite you to stop.

Spend a Great Canadian Weekend on the Cabot Trail

For years, the Cabot Trail has been one of the world's most famous roads to drive. It runs about 300 kilometres, looping around the edges of Cape Breton Island. As too many who venture onto the road have discovered, however, the trail is deserving of much more time than what a simple day trip affords.

A Rock 'N Roll Tour of Nova Scotia

Matt Mays calls Dartmouth the New Jersey of Nova Scotia. If that's the case, you could say he is the Bruce Springsteen of the Maritimes. Songs about life in Mays' unheralded hometown located on the other side of the big city are reminiscent of how Springsteen so often wrote about the characters on the Jersey Shore during his early career.

A Renewable Version of the Oil Sands -- in Nova Scotia

On an average day, about 160-billion tonnes of seawater flows into the Bay of Fundy. This is where an ocean research centre decided to put their tidal energy test site. According to recent models, there is roughly 7,000 megawatts of potentially extractable tidal energy in the Minas Basin. Of that number, researchers say about 2,500 megawatts can be tapped safely. That's more than enough electricity for all of Nova Scotia.
