Teaching My Kids to Stand Up for the Underdog

Debra Goldblatt-Sadowski

As I sit here, almost seven months pregnant, I'm faced with thinking about what the future holds for generations to come. I want to teach my children to do the right thing -- always. But with the layers of social media, experimentation with sex and drugs earlier than ever before, and the apparent lack of support from our justice system, how can I make sure they are safe?

Rape Culture Knows No Borders

In India, a five-year-old girl was kidnapped, raped, tortured and left for dead. This, on the heels of the brutal gang rape in India that happened back in December. And a story about a six-year-old Indian girl who was raped. And a story about 11- and 13-year-old sisters who were raped by their mother's boyfriend. All of these rapes happened within a week's span. Rape culture knows no borders. We all live in it. We all participate in it.

Why These Five "Solutions" Won't End Rape Culture

Last month, I wrote how patriarchy and racism give birth to rape culture, not a drunk woman or her miniskirt. But it is baffling to see the dialogue outside of these platforms going off on a tangent, in random directions. This needs to stop, now. Here are five "solutions" that aren't stopping rape culture.

Sadly, Sexual Assaults Hurt Everyone In Canada

Sexual assault is anything but uncommon and like it or not, it affects us all. It's not only a moral or ethical issue -- it's an economic issue that has not gone completely unnoticed. A single act of violence against a woman may result in complete absence from work..... For companies specifically, it impacts their bottom line.

What All Boys Should Be Told About Rehtaeh Parsons

In November 2011, when Rehtaeh Parsons was 15, she went with a friend to a party. Her mother said she was raped by four boys. I've seen a common refrain expressed online: "What are we teaching our kids?" It's a good question to ask when four young men allegedly felt that they had the right to do whatever they liked to a girl

Sexual Violence Is Not Inherent in Men

One of the reasons behind why the media focused on the "ruined" lives of the Steubenville rapists and ignored the suffering of their victim is this: we think she asked for it and doesn't deserve our empathy. She should have known better than to get drunk and lose consciousness at a party full of boys who, being victims of their inherent need for sexual violence, can't be blamed for being male.

Why Canadians Shouldn't Travel to India

My friend has written on her blog that the media is guilty of sensationalism in the coverage of rapes in India. I disagree with her assessment, however. The attention the media is giving to the rape epidemic in India is long, long overdue. Should you be scared? Not really. But ask, is India as safe to travel as anywhere else? The answer is no, it's not.

Is International Women's Day an International Joke?

Supriya Dwivedi | Posted 05.08.2013 | Canada
Supriya Dwivedi

Today is International Women's Day, and although you might notice the requisite "Let's Empower Women and Girls" op-ed on your social media news feeds, the truth is that this day is more or less a farce. It's a day where society can say they have talked about "women's" issues for a day in order to make themselves feel like they have contributed to the betterment of humanity. Note the use of quotations. That's because I'm systematically flabbergasted as to how certain facts are perceived to be solely a women's rights issue and not a human rights issue. If any other race, religious organization, or linguistic group were treated in the same manner as women are worldwide the entire planet would be up in arms.

Why You Should Care About International Women's Day

With so many international atrocities committed against women on a daily basis, I as a woman in the west sometimes feel that there is very little that we can do. But living in the lap of luxury doesn't remove the sadness one feels when they see the news reports. I feel overwhelmed by the state of women and believe we should act more. This International Women's Day let us educate ourselves and the society at large.

Dear Krista Ford, I Was Sexually Assaulted, but Not Dressed Like a Whore

Dear a lot of people, but specifically Ms. Krista Ford, I feel like you owe me a moment of your time, even though we've never met. The circumstance being you called me a whore. I should clarify: I'm one of the victims of the recent string of sexual assaults in the Annex. 'Sup? It's nice to make your acquaintance. For the record, I was sexually assaulted while wearing a knee-length polka-dot dress. The last time I wore that dress, it was to Easter dinner at my Gran's, where I'm fairly certain I could make little to no money whoring.

How Julian Assange Made it Harder for Women to Report Rape

Erika Lust | Posted 10.29.2012 | Canada Politics

Julian Assange faces an Interpol order for his extradition to Sweden for the crime of sexual assault, though he has sought asylum to avoid these charges (among others). This case infuriates me: as a Swedish woman, a feminist, and someone who works to promote sex as passionate and beautiful act within the adult industry. Rape is a gross power play and the message to victims needs to be that, though they were violated, they can regain control through reporting their rape. I understand that many have no faith in the legal and political system, and that Assange is responsible for a lot of disillusionment in this regard.

To Win as a Party, Republicans Must Lose This Election

If Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan win in November the religious fringe of the Republican Party will solidify its place in Republican politics. The Party needs to lose, and loose badly, so it can remove from its tent the intolerant and credulous whose presence has begun to rot the bowels of a once great institution.

As a Rape Survivor, You Get Used to Stupid Remarks Like Akin's

Donald D'Haene

Todd Akin's ridiculous declaration on the serious crime of rape has created a justifiable uproar. Rape victims everywhere have experienced similar insensitive, nonsensical remarks. Count on it. But no one can top the comments of the man who sexually assaulted me for a period of 11 years.

You've Been Raped? Well, We'll See About That

Daniel Alexandre Portoraro

So a left-wing British MP and Republican Representative from Missouri walk into a bar... Rep. Todd Akin and the garrulous George Galloway would certainly do well to have a drink together one of these nights. Regardless of the fact they both exist on opposite ends of the political spectrum, their backwards, dangerous, women-hating views on rape are eerily similar.

For Daniel Tosh, Gang Rape is a Gas

Daniel Tosh, the host of Tosh.0, recently performed stand-up at the Laugh Factory whereby he proceeded to make many a joke about rape. After a woman in the audience retorted, "Actually, rape jokes are never funny!" he proceeded to ponder aloud how funny it would be if she were gang raped right then and there. And he got laughs. So, what is it about violence against women that is so time-tested and hilarious? And why do people feel the need to defend the "right" to make such jokes?

Student Victims of Sexual Assault Need Support

Student after student came to the microphone, many sobbing as they shared their experiences of sexual assault. One woman said she had tried to commit suicide twice after she was attacked. Another spoke of a friend who sought help on campus after being assaulted. No one returned her calls.

Libya's Sharia Law: A Different Kind of Tyranny

True democracy and Sharia law are irreconcilable. Women are officially inferior. Apostasy -- the changing of religions, or abandoning Islam for Christianity -- is a crime. And running a country with a banking system that allows no interest payments poses problems on the international stage.
