Leitch's stance on tightening the vetting process for immigrants and refugees is not the sole parallel between her and President Donald Trump, and we are dangerously recreating the identical scenery that enabled him in the first place. To all those that derided the supporters of Trump and even Sanders, who called them despicable (Trump) or idealistic (Sanders), who dismissed them as impractical or racist -- change your ways, or at least your thinking. The "great unwashed" are marching. And they're angry.
Before we get too happy with ourselves, we should remember that we're a country that elected Harper for two terms and that few people in Toronto believed that Rob Ford would be elected. The city says the rare honour has not been granted to a former mayor in decades.
We knew he wouldn't be convicted, but it still felt like the criminal justice system had betrayed us. Another affirmation that the law is not on our side; that we live in a country where people are still more comfortable chastising women for getting involved with violent men than we are with holding those men accountable for their own behaviour.
